Fifth Grade Facts

October 9, 2019
Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
Parent Teacher conferences are right around the corner. Please be sure to sign up in Parent Vue if you haven't done so already. We look forward to discussing your student's progress with you!
Thank you to everyone who will be donating something for our Halloween party, whether it be sending something in or volunteering to help in the classroom. Thank you to our “Classroom Moms & Dads,” for all the time and effort put into organizing this event. We know our kids appreciate it! Halloween will be here before you know it! Weather permitting, parents are invited to attend the Halloween parade at 2:00. Students and teachers will parade around the outside perimeter of the school and parents are welcome to come and watch! We will then return to our classrooms to celebrate for the last 45 minutes of the day. Please remember that students need to bring a costume that can go over their clothes since we are not able to send students to the restrooms to change. Also, please save face painting and plastic weapons for trick or treating after school.
Our classes are finishing up unit 2 in math and will test soon. Then we will begin unit 3. We will be focusing on multiplication and division with fractions. Please continue to review multiplication and division facts with your child since these facts are the foundation for the unit. It would also benefit your child to review their homework with them each night.
Language Arts (ELA)
In language arts we are continuing with guided reading, station work, and writing. Students have been introduced to how writing strong leads and focused ideas influences the quality of our writing. In shared reading, we are discussing mood and tone, and how authors use word choice to give their writing a particular tone. We have watched short movie trailers from Mary Poppins and Frozen, demonstrating two completely different tones. Be sure to ask your student all about it!
In science we are continuing our variables unit. Students will soon be using catapults to conduct controlled experiments (think of corks and tin foil balls flying around the room…) and there will be a quiz and test down the road. There will also be a culminating test that covers the entire variables unit before the end of the trimester.
Our students are enjoying filling in a class matrix about a European explorer they have researched. After we read about each explorer as a class, we will have our next test.
