Notes from Our Team

ELA (Mrs. Childress & Ms. O'Brien)

From Mrs. Childress:

It is hard to believe that this is our final newsletter of the year. Thank you all for a wonderful school year. Students are closing out the year with our final unit, Personal Narrative. Students are working on some writing exercises including writing different types of leads, snapshots, thoughtshots, flashbacks, and including literary devices in their writing.

PLEASE check SIS for current grades. Several students still have the opportunity to retake the summative test on our book the Wednesday Wars. It was a big grade as we spent most of the quarter reading the book.

The last reading project of the year is due on the 16th.

Please do not hesitate to reach out and email me at any time: childress.mollie@wgmail.org

From Ms. O'Brien:

Happy End of the Year! I cannot believe we are already wrapping up our school year, and I am so excited by all of the progress that we have made in ELA this year.

All assignments are due Wednesday, May 17th at 11:59pm. Students will not be able to submit anything (except ongoing assignments) after this deadline.

We are currently working on our final unit, which is narrative writing. Students will end the year by creating a picture book based on an original story that they write in class.

Please feel free to reach out with questions and concerns on Canvas or by email at obrien.megan@wgmail.org

Science (Mrs. Meyer & Mr. Lopez)

Mrs. Meyer’s Syllabus: HERE

From Mrs. Meyer:

Happy May! We are so close to the end of 6th grade! Students have worked so hard through the year - I am so proud of the learning they have done together.

We are finishing the year with our Cycling of Matter and Flow of Energy test next Friday, May 19. Students will demonstrate their understanding of matter and energy as they move through ecosystems in this unit.

Students will also complete the EcoBottle activity over the next two weeks. For this activity they have used the Engineering Design Process to design a sustainable ecosystem in a bottle. The ecosystems they have created are thriving! By collecting data each day, the students are documenting evidence of the cycling of matter and flow of energy that we are learning about in the unit. They are also witnessing limiting factors, interactions between elements in an ecosystem, and the balance of photosynthesis and cell respiration. The student groups will work together to summarize their learning into a presentation that will be shared with the class. This grade will count as a summative grade.

Please continue to check SIS for missing work. Students who have zeros will need to use Canvas to find the missing assignment lesson, complete the work, and turn it in to be graded by next Wednesday, May 17th.

Please email any questions to meyer.dawn@wgmail.org

From Mr. Lopez:

In Science, students have completed the unit on the cycles of matter and energy. Throughout this unit, students checked in with their ecobottles to look for evidence of these cycles. In particular, the oxygen cycle as the plant life used photosynthesis to survive, even in a closed system. The water cycle was also apparent as excess moisture condensed in the upper portions of the ecobottles and came back down as “rain.”

Students began putting together a slideshow presentation where they’ll include the biotic and abiotic factors in their ecobottles along with any symbiotic relationships and a detailed explanation of the reasons why their ecobottle was successful or unsuccessful.

If you have any questions about Science class, please do not hesitate to email me: lopez.patrick@wgmail.org

American History (Mr. Lopez & Ms. O'Brien)

Mr. Lopez’s Syllabus: HERE

Ms. O’Brien’s Syllabus: HERE

From Mr. Lopez:

In Social Studies, students have completed their 1920s research projects. These will be in the grade book as a summative assignment. We took a tour of the completed projects in a museum that we set up in the main lobby here at school to learn about all of the prosperity that was experienced by many Americans at the time.

We are currently studying the Great Depression through a slideshow presentation in which students have to make certain decisions. This activity leads to great discussions about the hardships that were common during this time.

Next, we’ll talk about the causes of the Great Depression. Students will create a Facebook page for President Herbert Hoover featuring the five causes covered in a BrainPop video.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me: lopez.patrick@wgmail.org

From Ms. O'Brien:

Happy End of the Year! I cannot believe we are already wrapping up our school year, and I am so excited by all of the progress that we have made in Social Studies this year.

All assignments are due Wednesday, May 17th at 11:59pm. Students will not be able to submit anything (except ongoing assignments) after this deadline.

We are currently learning about the causes of WWII. Students examined the impact of the Treaty of Versailles on the instigation of WWII and learned about the five major causes of the war. Students will create a one pager to showcase the five causes and will end the year with a documentary about the war.

Mrs. Mattison's Syllabus: HERE

From Ms. Skoglund & Mrs. Mattison:

This week in math class students started their data projects! They brainstormed statistical, numerical questions, collected data, and analyzed this data by finding measures of center. Students also created dot plots and box plots. Next week students will organize their data in a Google Slide Presentation, and present their findings to the class. This project will be the summative grade for this final unit. Have a great week!
