Assessing and Social Emotional Learning
It feels so good to have finished our second full week of school. I already feel settled into the school year and I am looking forward to all of the growth our students will make over the course of the year. The past few weeks the teachers have been doing a lot of assessing, getting a good handle on where are students are at academically and also planning for how to move each student up the "academic ladder."
We have also been doing some extra lessons to help build a positive climate at Great Lakes. Teachers have taught anti-bullying lessons and have also taught lessons on what it looks like to be respectful, responsible, and ready to learn at Great Lakes. In addition to those lessons, Mrs. Woods and Mrs. Roberts have also taught a fun and interactive lesson called Sweet Respect. Ask your child about the lesson on respect in which the teaches uses, pepper, soap and sugar. It was tons of fun!
As we look to October, we are planning a Trunk or Treat event on October 17th at 6:30. Please look for more details to come in the near future and as always, please reach out to me if you have any suggestions, questions, or concerns.

Volunteers Needed
We are always in need of volunteers at Great Lakes. Specifically, this year we are in need of building up our active members on our PTO. The PTO at Great Lakes is a fantastic way for parents to get involved in the school. Our PTO Meetings are typically the third Thursday of every month and the meetings run from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. We meet in the library at Great Lakes and are sure to end meetings on time as we know how busy our families are.
In addition to needing more active members of our PTO, we also are looking for volunteers to help with Goodies and the Book Fair this year. If you are interested in volunteer at Great Lakes, please contact the front office (786.1201) for more information. You could also fill our your volunteer profile online here.
