La Vernia High School
"Where Connections Count"
November 16, 2017
Dear La Vernia High School Community,
As we near the Thanksgiving Break and enter the holiday season, I am extremely thankful for our students' accomplishments, the support and involvement of our parents and community members, and our hard-working teachers and staff, who work endless hours to ensure students' success.
I know that the Sutherland Springs Tragedy affected all of us, and I am very grateful for the high school staff and outside agencies that assisted us for working together, being flexible, and supporting our students. If your student needs counseling or you would like information regarding additional grief/crisis counseling resources, please do not hesitate to contact our counseling office.
After the Thanksgiving Break, there are three weeks and two days before students will begin semester exams, which will be on December 20th, 21st, and 22nd. An exam schedule will be emailed to parents and shared with students. Students will not be allowed to take exams early; if your son or daughter will not be at school for exams, please contact their teachers and Mr. Steven Verm, Academic Dean. Students, who have qualified for exam exemptions, must still report to those classes where they earned exemptions (please refer to exam exemption letter that was emailed at the beginning of the semester).
Also, please remember to check the parent portal regularly to keep up with your student's grades and attendance. If you do not have time to check the parent portal, share your login information with your student and have him/her login and discuss grades and attendance with you. Parent portal information can be requested from the high school office if you do not remember your login information. If you have concerns regarding grades, please contact your student's teacher, and for concerns regarding attendance, please contact one of the Assistant Principals, Mr. Davis Haass or Mr. John Zamora.
On Friday, November 17th, we will begin with a morning pep rally to recognize our teams for their successes and upcoming games. That evening, our Varsity Bears play HM King in the first round of playoffs at Gregory Portland at 7:30pm.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

HOSA Trip to Fort Sam Houston
The La Vernia High School second year medical professions students embarked on a VIP tour to several of Fort Sam Houston's medical military areas. The tour began at the Army Medical Department Center and School Museum where they saw firsthand how military medicine has evolved throughout time.
The second stop was to the World Famous Burn Unit located at one of the biggest military hospitals, Brooke Army Medical Center. The tour to the Burn Unit was an eye-opening experience as students discovered the amount time and dedication health care providers spend to not only save lives, but to also rehabilitate burn survivors.
At the next stop, students toured the Center for the Intrepid, a state of the art rehabilitation facility that treats amputees and burn victims. Here they learned how soldiers can transition back into military or civilian life.
The final medical stop took them to McWethy Medical Clinic, where they learned how this small clinic that has all necessary departments can take and process over 100 soldiers in the early morning, can get them treated, and sent back to training.
On the way off the post, these students stopped at the historical Quadrangle, a location that has still has a few livestock and once housed the famous Apache War Chief Geronimo in 1886. The tour was all put together by our very own health science teacher and coach, Joe Carranza, a Captain in the Army, who once worked at the Burn Unit and served over 22 years of active military service.
Student Council Trip to St. Philip's College
On Thursday, November 9th, four of the La Vernia High School Student Council Officers, Amanda Leija, Cruz Leija, Allison Newberg, and Leah Munoz with their sponsor, Sandy Land attended the 2017 Jessica’s Project Symposium on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy at St. Philip's College. The symposium presented information on the dangers of head injuries as well as research that may help to repair the damage.
Keynote speakers at the event were James Lechleiter from UT Health Scien...ce, Rhonda Johnson from Hope4mind, Kelly Ramsey the president of TXBI, and Jonas Crafts, Retired NFL Player.
After the Keynote speakers, Dr. Solom Nfor, the sponsor of Jessica’s Project, recognized the La Vernia High School Student Council for the books they had collected for the “Care for Cameroon” project . The Council worked with all of the schools in the district and the community. The council collected 9,000 books and boxed them to be sent to Cameroon, Africa. The books will go to the English speaking schools that are not able to get books for their students.
