Hughes Hawk Creed
A Letter from Mrs. McDonald
I am including information below based on what I know to be true TODAY! :) Please keep in mind that in today's times, things are frequently changing and there are still many unknowns. What we know to be true today is as follows-
- School will start on August 20, 2020 remotely for students.
- Beginning September 14th, students will attend either in-person learning or continue with remote learning. If you have not completed your preference form, or if your preference has changed, please visit the 2020-2021 Preference Form. You may complete the form as many times as necessary, changing your preference at any time. Knowing your current thoughts matter to us as we prepare class lists, and hope to maintain rapport and consistency between your child and his/her teacher's throughout the school year, whether in-person or remote.
I have included a few new updates below. Please review carefully.
Thank you for your continued partnership, and remember, here at Hughes Elementary...

Virtual Kinder Round-Up Plans Coming Soon!
If you have a new kinder kiddo, this is a BIG year for both of you! NISD has a planning team that is working to provide safe, meaningful virtual experiences for your family. It may look a little different, but our goal is the same! We want to welcome you and establish a positive home-school connection, and excite your child about the new experiences to come! Stay tuned for more information!
Meet the Teacher Event
Teachers will be sending an e-mail prior to this event to welcome your child to his/her classroom. This e-mail is important because it will provide you with all of the communication links you will need for the year, especially the SeeSaw links.
We are looking forward to this event!
Chromebooks for Your Child
Technology Update
Chromebook Check Out
Chromebooks will be distributed to EACH student PK-12 beginning August 3. Please see the specifics here. I want to strongly encourage you to make arrangements to check out a Chromebook for each of your children. Keep in mind that remote learning times will overlap, making sharing a device unrealistic. District-issued Chromebooks are ideal in that it allows for ease of login, making sign in for other platforms much easier. In addition, our technology help desk is well-versed on the Chromebook; therefore, it facilitates providing support remotely.
Technology Help Desk (English/Spanish)
Please utilize this link to submit any problems you may be experiencing in accessing NISD digital resources. Help is available in English and Spanish!

School Supplies
The school supplies that families ordered last spring have arrived and will be distributed to your child in the near future. We are working on a plan to distribute these items to you and will keep you posted.
School Supply UPDATE
We will send details as we are able, but I wanted to share my thinking with you! Please keep in mind that things are changing almost daily, but I am attempting to give you a bit of notice. We are working on a system for school supplies that will allow you to purchase just the few items your child will need for remote learning. These items will remain at home with you throughout the year, in the event of another closure.
We know that some children take great pride in selecting some of their tools. Backpacks, lunch boxes, and supply boxes reflect each child's unique personality. Please keep the following in mind prior to purchasing, in preparation for in-person learning:
- Pencil Boxes- students in grades K-3 will need a pencil BOX. Children are welcome to purchase their own "personal" supply box to stay AT school, or we can provide one for them. Please do NOT purchase a pencil bag or pouch. We want to keep student supplies at school in a container that is easily wiped down (4th and 5th grade more info to come.)
- Lunch Boxes- all students are welcome to bring personalized lunch boxes to school during in-person learning. We recommend light weight, hard surfaced containers that are easily wiped down.
- Backpacks- to help support social distancing, we will not be using LOCKERS at school when we return for in-person learning. Therefore items brought from home must be compact as they will be stored in the classroom. We ask that all children bring a DRAWSTRING Nylon Bag instead of a traditional backpack. These lightweight bags will hold a child's lunch and water bottle, are easily wiped down, and will hang on the back of the child's chair in the classroom. If children do not have a drawstring bag, one will be provided for them. (See example photo.)
- We will NOT be using the red daily folder system for communication because we are limiting how many things are being touched. All communication will be sent using SeeSaw. You can download this app on your phone to check your child's progress.
Our goal is to streamline materials, allowing you to have what you need at home -without too much traveling to and from school, and keep the needs, interests, and safety of students, staff, and families in the forefront.
