2nd & 3rd Grade News/ NOTICIAS
Mrs. O'Rourke's Class
November 5,, 2019
Happy November!
We have had a busy fall! Fireman Tony came to visit; We participated in Red Ribbon Week; We made flower vases to give to the residents at the retirement home; We had lots of Halloween activities and we harvested our classroom garden! Please see the pictures below :)
World Kindness Day is Wednesday, November 13. We will be participating in an all school project to celebrate World Kindness Day!
Parent-Teacher conferences will be on Monday, November 25 at night and Tuesday, November 26 in the morning. I sent home confirmation letters last month. If you didn't receive a confirmation or would like a reminder, please let me know. I am looking forward to talking with everyone this month!
Just a reminder: Our library day is on Thursdays at 2:00 PM. Please help your child be responsible and make sure they bring their books back to school every week. If they do not have their books on Thursday, they do not get to participate in the library check out.
Please help your child be responsible and check his/her backpack every day. Some of the backpacks are full of papers! If they have homework, the homework will be in the red folder. They are still learning so we need to teach them how to be organized :)
The students need to have gym shoes if they want to participate in PE. You are welcome to leave a pair of gym shoes here at school to be used during PE. Some students are coming to school with boots and loafers. Unfortunately, they are not allowed on the gym floor if they don't have gym shoes on.
Now that the weather is getting colder, please remember to send a hat, gloves and a warm coat to school with your child. The students go out to recess every day unless the weather is below 32 degrees. So, they are going out to recess when the weather is in the 30's. It could be pretty cold outside! If they would like to play in the snow, they need to bring snowpants, snowboots and warm gloves. I have some hats and gloves that they are welcome to borrow if they forget theirs at home. But, oftentimes they take my gloves home by accident. So sometimes I only have a couple of extra pairs to share. If you would like to donate some extra hats or gloves to our classroom, that would be much appreciated!
Let me know if you have any questions or comments!

¡Feliz noviembre!

Literacy/Literatura
We are learning about fictional text. Each text represents different settings, problems, solutions, and unique characters. We are using graphic organizers as we read to identify the characters, setting, problem and solution in each story. We are comparing stories that have similar settings or problems/solutions.
We have started learning about different types of fiction. We have been reading fables. Fables are fun to read because they usually have animals as their main characters and they teach us a lesson in the end!
Please...Don't forget to sign and send in your child's reading log at the end of each month! The students should read for about 20 minutes a night during the school week. Don't worry if they miss a night or two. The students will write the number of minutes they read on the calendar. On the back of the calendar, they can write the books that they read. They can read the same books over and over if they want! They can read to a sibling or a friend. At the end of the month, when the students bring back their reading logs, they get a prize from our prize box. We don't count how many days they read on the calendar, we just want them to find some time at home to read! As you know, research tells us that the more children read, the better readers they become. Please let me know if you would like me to send home some books for your child to read at home! Please send the signed October reading log back to school on November 1st. I will send home the November reading log on November 1st!
During writing time, we are continuing to focus on writing clearly and correctly (capital letters at the beginning of the sentence, no random capitals throughout the sentence, correct punctuation, proper spacing, etc.). They are learning about the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, editing, and publishing).
We have been working on the Bilingual Grammar Curriculum ASL & English. This is an awesome curriculum that really helps the students with their writing. Currently, we are working on predicate development.

The students are working on a measurement unit. We have been learning about inches, feet, yards, centimeters and meters. We have been comparing and contrasting different units of measurement. We have been solving every day word problems with measurement.
3rd Grade
We are continuing to work on multiplication and division concepts. We are learning to use models and arrays to solve simple multiplication problems. The students are understanding the commutativity of multiplication by drawing models and using manipulatives to create models. We are discussing the relationship between multiplication and division.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES Estudios Sociales
Our classroom garden is really growing! We harvested our classroom garden! This was a great culminating activity for our plant ecosystem unit. We used the basil and the cucumbers in recipes that we cooked in the classroom.
We have started a Life Science unit on habitats and animals. We will be making observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats. We will compare and contrast plant and animal life cycles. We will discuss Interdependent relationships in ecosystems and how animals and plants depend on their habitats and each other.
