A Note from Our Principal

Hello North Beach Families,

I hope you were able to enjoy some family time away from electronic devices during our week away from school! I know everyone on staff needed a few days of down time, and students needed a break. December 1st marked the end of the first trimester of the year. Teachers are currently working on completing progress reports, which will be available through The Source on December 28. Progress reports can be a valuable form of communication between home and school. We typically expect progress report grades to be consistent with assessments and work teachers collect in class. During remote learning, the above expectations may not hold true. Teachers assign grades based on available evidence. In the remote learning environment, teachers’ ability to observe student class participation and understanding during live instruction is limited compared to what they can do at school.

During remote learning, some students must be very independent completing their schoolwork, perhaps much more independent than we would normally expect of an elementary student. In other cases, students have an adult who is helping correct their work before submitting. Consequently, teachers are doing their best to summarize the evidence available in determining grades for this reporting period.

I’d like to the thank our community for contributing to the Giving Tree. As we all know, this has been an extraordinarily difficult year for many families and the Giving Tree will provide support to many of our students and their families. Likewise, while we’ve postponed our Big Give fundraising campaign until 2021, the PTA received support from community members who were able to do so in 2020. I’d like to highlight one of the ways the Big Give supports all students at North Beach. Our tutoring program is coordinated by Carolyn Hostetler. Ms. Hostetler works with Seattle Pacific University to hire students through work study to tutor at North Beach. After going through a national background check, college students are trained by Ms. Hostetler and Mrs. Baker, Academic Interventionist, prior to tutoring North Beach students. We currently have 4 students working, with 3 more going through the process of hiring, as well as 3 professional SPS tutors supported by the PTA. We are providing 40 hours a week of tutoring support, or 160 separate tutoring sessions. Mrs. Baker collaborates with our classroom teachers to determine our most urgent needs. By providing additional support to classrooms, teachers can provide more individualized attention and instruction to every student. The tutoring program funded by the North Beach PTA is an essential part of the academic support we provide to our students.

Thank you for your ongoing support. Have a wonderful weekend!

Kristine McLane

Big Emotions - what your kids are learning at school and how you can help

If you missed our November Family Support Session, you can catch it here. Katie Gruver (North Beach Parent and Parent Educator) and I discussed how your kids are learning to identify and manage their emotions with the RULER curriculum. We also dived into the brain science of dysregulation and how families can support big emotions at home.

The North Beach Giving Tree is a long-standing, heart-warming tradition where families sponsor holiday gifts for families in need. Like all things 2020, it’s going to look a little different this year.

Due to pandemic restrictions we’re unable to safely procure and deliver individual gifts, so we had to get creative! This year we are offering the ability for families to donate gift cards and grocery cards to our North Beach, Whitman Middle School, and Broadview K-8 families who might be experiencing financial hardship this holiday season. Principal McLane has estimated that 4x as many of our families might need assistance this holiday season compared to past years.

Each family will receive a $25 gift card per child plus a grocery store gift card as we're able. Help where you can and spread some joy this year! Add your donation(s) online using the cart below. All gift cards will be procured by December 12th so please add your donation via Konstella no later than December 11th.

For Families Who Would Like to Receive a Gift From The Giving Tree

Please complete this form by December 8th.

All information is kept confidential and will only be shared as necessary with the main organizer and Alysa Reid, the North Beach school counselor. If you prefer to reach out to Ms. Reid directly, email

Save the Yearbook!

In the past, North Beach PTA has been fortunate enough to cover some or most of the cost of keepsake yearbooks for all of our students. This year, given budget restraints, that will unfortunately not be a possibility.

If a yearbook is something that you feel is important to you and your family please consider purchasing a yearbook for each student in your household. The yearbook committee is working very hard to find unique solutions to photos, class pictures, and the preservation of the most unique school year our students will ever have!

Purchase your yearbooks by Thursday, 12/17.

PLEASE NOTE: If you purchase a yearbook and the project is not fulfilled you will receive a 100% refund.

If you are interested in joining the yearbook committee or have any questions please email Rhonda Estigoy at
