History Corps
On Tuesday, April 24th, the Lenape History Corps was privileged to be invited to interview World War II veterans, attend a funeral at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors, visit the Navy Memorial, and be recognized by Admiral Thorp for their continued efforts to preserve American History.
The day began at the Vinson Hall Retirement community where the students interviewed one of the first female Naval Commanders to serve in World War II. The students also interviewed a World War II Navy Captain who was the youngest officer to witness the Japanese surrender ceremony on the deck of the USS Missouri and the conclusion of World War II.
The students were then invited to attend the funeral of a war veteran who they interviewed two years ago. The family of the veteran requested the presence of the students who preserved their loved ones service memories. At Arlington National Cemetery the students observed over 50 Marines in full dress uniform, a Marine Corps Band and the funeral procession through the National Cemetery. The students were thanked by the family who were appreciative that the students had preserved their loved one's memories.
At the conclusion of the day, the students traveled to the Navy Memorial where they were commended by Admiral Thorp on their hard work and commitment, preserving American History, one Veteran at a time. The Admiral also shared his memories at the Pentagon on September 11th, 2001.
