He’s almost to the finish line. McCoy, wrestling at 132 pounds, earned his fourth straight appearance in the state tournament after qualifying at the Region 2-6A UIL Wrestling Tournament in Allen this weekend. The senior, whose overall season record is 31-9 heading into state, got a quick takedown in his opening match against Richardson Lake Highlands’ Thomas Caverlee and posted a 13-10 decision over Joe Hendershot (Conroe The Woodlands College Park) to reach the semi-finals. Although McCoy was knocked into the consolation round in a hard-fought 7-3 decision loss to Austin Vandegrift’s Luke Sloan, who entered the match at 33-2 on the season, McCoy kept fighting for a state title berth, ultimately sealing the deal with a 17-2 technical fall over Cedar Park’s Devon Gassaway to reach the top four.

The state tournament will be held at Berry Center in Cypress this Friday and Saturday, the 22nd and 23rd. The top six wrestlers in each weight class will earn a spot on the podium at the state finals and return home with a medal.
