Heading into a long weekend that honors one of the greatest leaders in our nation’s history…
Our small musical ensembles delivered a terrific concert at the middle school last night.
The boys’ hockey team and many hundreds of their fans traveled to Boston for an unforgettable game at Fenway Park on Wednesday night.
Like the other schools across the district, HHS updated its Student Handbook this week. The new section (“Due Process for Students with Disabilities”) can be found on p. 80 of the Student Handbook.
A well-deserving HHS senior, Francesco Fulciniti, was named the “Opry Award” winner for January; like its namesake, our school’s much-loved comfort dog, the new award seeks to recognize a student who improves school climate and helps others to feel comfortable at HHS.
Looking ahead…
Midyear exams begin one week from today. The full exam schedule can be viewed on the school website.
Seniors can now begin exploring the many Town of Hingham scholarship opportunities.
SEPAC and the Hingham PTOs will sponsor a presentation from clinical psychologist Dr. Nadja Reilly about “How to Handle Anxiety, Depression & Your Kids” on Tuesday 1/17 at 7 PM in the HHS auditorium.
Hingham CARES will sponsor a free painting class for teens on Saturday 1/28 and a free bowling night for teens on Friday 2/10.
HHS will deliver its annual “Program of Studies Night” on Monday 2/13 at 7 PM. After introductory remarks about course selection in the auditorium, parents will have an opportunity to meet with department directors and coordinators in the school cafeteria. Student volunteers will provide building tours for any interested parents.
Many thanks to the nearly 300 families who have responded to the HPS technology surveys. If you have not yet had a chance to do so, we welcome your input. The Secondary Technology Survey can be completed at this link.
The Hingham Police Department has encouraged us to share the following item, which could be of interest to many of our parents:
The US Attorney's Office is hosting a virtual Internet Safety presentation for parents on Wednesday 1/18 from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. The presentation, entitled “Keeping Kids Safe and Secure Online: A Project Safe Childhood Presentation for Parents,” will bring awareness to the dangers of the internet, including gaming and social media platforms that predators use to groom children with the intent of exploiting them sexually online or for an in-person meeting. The presentation will focus on prevention by educating parents and community members about how to help keep children safe online. It will address the following topics:
Social Media 101 & Digital Footprint
Cyberbullying
Sexting
Gaming
Victim Support
Protecting Against Online Predation
Who should attend: Parents, guardians, local police departments, school administrators, youth program leaders, and anyone who would like to learn how to keep children safe from online dangers. The presentation is free, but registration (using the password PSC1) is required.
The daily notices, the full school calendar, and the student newspaper, can always be viewed on the HHS website. Look for details on the website and in our weekly PTO newsletter.
Finally, let's not forget the reason for the holiday on Monday, and may our work here at HHS always align with Dr. King's vision of a beloved community.

Unity Week Plans
Plans are well underway for our school's second annual Unity Week: 2/6 - 2/10. But those plans don't materialize magically. Here's to the students who regularly show up early, 40 minutes before their first class, to make it work!
Arts & Technology Pathways
A core group of HHS teachers and students spent the lunch block on Wednesday discussing what new "Pathways" programs in the arts and technology should look like. Their vision and collaboration will no doubt yield an excellent result for our school!
Ski Team Conquers the Cafeteria
Schools that don't compost and recycle in the cafeteria are on a very slippery slope. But here at HHS, with the ski team leading "Slash the Trash" efforts at lunch on Tuesday, we're racing in the right direction!
Southeastern Senior District Music Festival
Last week, 10 HHS students rehearsed and performed with other musicians across the Southeast region of MA at the Southeastern Senior District Music Festival. The sense of beauty, connection, and community was both powerful and moving.
Spring is Coming
Here's a sign of spring on a chilly winter morning: The caps and gowns have arrived!
