Spotlight on Classrooms
Mr. Campbell, Ms. Suggs, & Ms. Militana
In 7th grade social studies they are learning about Imperialism. By meeting our teens where they are and using a Mad Libs style activity, students have choices. They can come to understand imperialism while creating components of that society on their own Mad Lab. Great idea!
Ms. Steffensen
Students are working in groups to make decisions about Canada's environmental issues. If students miss class, they work with their groups to get caught up; they do it without missing a beat! Independently they determine which issue is the most important: acid rain, Great Lakes pollution, mining, or the timber industry. Once they use resources on a TES Teach to make that decision, they must elaborate with reasons for their claim. Finally, they'll come back as a group to evaluate the reasons and rank the issues in order of importance. This will involve discourse and group work!
Co-Teaching Ideas: Creating a Strong Team
- Communicate openly, and be willing to give and take/compromise
- Communicate with parents using pronouns to show that two active and involved teachers are in the classroom
“we” “us” “our” when sending out emails or meeting in person with parents
- Use stations and small group instruction to re-deliver instruction to struggling kids.
- “PUSH-IN” and co-taught models are just that; two minds are always better than one
- Make your colleague feel valued and important. Let the students see two teachers laughing and having fun
