Attendance Information and Update
Attendance Letters
Last week, we sent letters to families of all students who have missed 10 or more days of school so far this school year. We will follow up with additional information in the coming days and we will be setting up meetings with families to create a plan for ensuring that each child is in school as much as possible. We are here to work with you and to help break down any barriers that are preventing your children from being in school on a regular basis.
Attendance Committee
We have created an Attendance Committee comprised of our Head of Operations, School Psychologist, Co-Directors, Community Support Coordinator, and a few teachers. This group will be creating system to highlight children who have great school attendance as well as help us create systems to support families who need support with regular school attendance. If you have ideas for this committee, please email Brooke (brooke@brooklyncompass.org).
Note About Chronic Absenteeism
Chronic absenteeism is defined as 20 days of absences or more per year, and we are expected to notify the Administration for Children's Services (ACS) when we are concerned about a child's poor attendance record, even if the 20-day mark has not yet been reached. Chronic absenteeism requires further investigation by school officials, the police, and/or the Administration for Children‘s Services.
Notes from the Security Staff
We had a check in meeting with our security team last week. They said that they like working with our families and that for the most part, things are going well from a security perspective. Thank you all for following the building policies and regulations.
Please keep the following three items in mind:
Please use the proper doors for entering and exiting the building.
- Please drop children off in the cafeteria if arriving between 7:20AM and 7:40AM
- Please enter the red doors closer to Carlton Avenue if dropping off children between 7:45-8:00AM.
- Please exit using the red doors closer to Carlton Avenue when leaving between 7:45AM-8:00AM or 4:45-4:10PM.
- Please only use the main entrance on Adelphi Street if dropping off or picking up after 8:00AM or before 3:45PM. You may also use the main entrance for after school events and meetings.
- Visitors are not permitted to enter the building through the cafeteria during the school day.
Please sign in at the security desk anytime you come to the school at times other than arrival and dismissal.
- The security guards are required to keep a record of who enters and exits the building. We ask that you always sign in when entering the building at times other than arrival and dismissal.
- If you come to school at other times of the day, please always use the main entrance and sign in at the security desk.
Please do not bring pets into the building (unless, of course, they are Compass class pets!).
- There are no dogs or cats allowed in the building.
Our Healthy School Fund: March
If you have not already contributed to the Healthy School Fund for September and October, please do so as soon as possible. We ask that you contribute $30 per child per month. If you need support in making contributions to the Healthy School Fund, please let us know and we will do our best to support you.

Various ways you can make payments to Compass (for the Healthy Snack Fund, t-shirts, school lunches) include:
- Mail or hand-deliver a Cash, Check, or Money Order to Todd or Chelsea (For the time being, please only give money to these two Compass employees. Haleema, our new Finance Manager, will be setting up a new process for receiving funds in the near future.)
- Venmo: username = compasscharter
- Square Cash = send your contribution to Todd’s work email address: todd@brooklyncompass.org.
- Here are slightly sophisticated directions for how to setup an automatic payment through Square Cash if that helps you.
- Chase QuickPay = send your contribution to Todd’s work email address: todd@brooklyncompass.org. Chase's platform allows you to easily setup a recurring payment.
