Homeschool Hatchery February Open Lab
Our Makerspace, the Homeschool Hatchery, will be hosting an "Open Lab" day on February 23rd from 1:30-3:00pm.
Open Lab days encourage family “hands on time” with Maker Materials received from the Alliant Energy Foundation and other donors. The materials supplied will vary each open lab day. Participants could experience floor robots, coding centers, cardboard and LEGO build stations, the demolition center, green screen/stop motion photography, and virtual reality expeditions.

YMCA OPEN SWIM
The First and Third Wednesdays

The YMCA generously opens their pool for CR-HSAP families during their open swim times. This opportunity is free. When families go, please show your membership card or if you are not a member of the Y, please sign in on the CR-HSAP sheet located at the front desk.
Below are the YMCA Rules:
1. A parent needs to accompany their children at this event.
2. Any non-swimmers must wear a floatation device; plan to bring your own.
3. The non-swimmer must have their parent in the water and within an arm’s length reach at all times.
4. Inflatable items are not allowed.
5. Pool toys are allowed, but use may be constrained depending on patron usage of the pool during that Open Swim time.
6. Lifeguards have the authority over all of the posted pool rules and rules that only appear in the YMCA’s handbook.
State Historical Museum Visit
This visit is free, and all ages are welcome.
The State Historical Museum of Iowa has been a trusted source for the preservation and education of Iowa’s history since its founding in 1857, just 11 years after Iowa became a state.
Check out the following exhibits:

- Explore Iowa’s rich natural resources and the balance between using these resources and preserving them in Delicate Balance.
- Discover what inspired more than 76,000 Iowans to fight for the Union and the role they played in the nation’s bloodiest war in Iowa and the Civil War.
- Explore Iowa’s legacy with the silver screen from the early 1900s to today in Hollywood in the Heartland.
- Discover the history of bicycling in Iowa including the story of the Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride across Iowa (RAGBRAI®) in Riding Through History.
- Learn about life in Iowa before it became a state and the many changes that took place when settlers arrived in You Gotta Know the Territory.

Des Moines Science Center Visit
At the Science Center of Iowa, there are no boundaries except the limits of your imagination. The Science Center of Iowa engages and inspires Iowans along their journey of lifelong science learning.
Explore the interactive exhibits, explore the most feared and revered of all dinosaurs in new and different ways, and join us for the live science program, Fire and Ice at 2:30pm.
All ages are welcome! The cost of this visit is $2.00 per student. The first adult is free, additional adults are $5.50. Please arrive by 12:50pm to pay Ms. Deann in cash before the 1:00 start time.

Kirkwood WLC Presentation on Summer and Fall 2018 Internships
Current Sophomores and Juniors eligible
Application deadline extended to February 15th at 3:00pm
The Kirkwood WLC Internship coordinator will be visiting our high school students to give a short presentation on the MANY internship opportunities available. These include areas like cosmetology, dental, theatre, marketing, engineering, graphic design, interior design, teaching, sports intern, and many more! Parents are welcome to join us for the presentation.
What’s this all about? Current sophomore and juniors are eligible for 60 and 90-hour internships through Workplace Learning Connection (WLC). YOU get to decide your interest area, and WLC staff will connect you with an area employer. This is also a fantastic opportunity to practice your application, interview and professional skills with low pressure.

Valentine’s Day Party at the Play Station

Come enjoy this holiday with friends! This party is for all children up through the 5th grade. Older siblings may attend to make this a family event.
Cost Options:
· $5.99 per child to play, decorate a cookie, and make a craft
· $3.99 per child for children who have a Play Station Pass and want to decorate a cookie and make a craft

State Hygienic Laboratory Tour
This tour is offered for students in grade 6 and older only. The tour is free of charge. Parents must sign up with their full name as it appears on their driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID. This ID will be shown to gain entry to this secure environment.
The State Hygienic Laboratory website states:
“The State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa protects and improves quality of life by providing reliable environmental and public health information through the collective knowledge and capabilities of our organization.
Their vision is for Iowa to be a national leader in improving and sustaining quality of life through innovation, practice, and policy. Since 1904, the State Hygienic Laboratory has been at the forefront of public health issues in Iowa. As the state’s public health and environmental laboratory, the Hygienic Laboratory serves all of Iowa’s 99 counties through disease detection, environmental monitoring, and newborn and maternal screening.
An Environmental Protection Agency-certified facility, the Hygienic Laboratory conducts testing of drinking water as mandated by the Safe Drinking Water Act. The staff also works with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to monitor waterways throughout the state for contaminants and to assess air quality in real-time and through lab testing”.

Grant Wood AEA Hearing Screening
Every year Grant Wood AEA offers a hearing screening to children in our home school program. If you would like to have your Preschooler-12th grade home school children screened for hearing by GWAEA, please bring your children to our Home School office. Staff will then escort each parent and their children to the hearing van. The screening will take place between 11:00AM-12:00PM.

Do you know what happens from the time you buy an airplane ticket until you get to your destination? Have you wondered what kinds of jobs it takes to get you safely from Cedar Rapids to another part of the country? Join us as we check out the ticket counter, the baggage return, and safety areas. The tour is free of charge. Parking is $3.00 for 31-60 minutes and $1.00 for each additional ½ hour.
Because our space is VERY limited for this tour, we are limiting our RSVP sign up to one parent and CRHSAP students enrolled in grades kindergarten and up.

Demonstration Table at the Cedar Rapids STEM Festival
All 6th-8th grade students in enrichment classes are invited to help lead a demonstration booth at the annual Linn County STEM Festival at the Linn Regional Center. Our CRHSAP will be participating as a vendor to share fun physics activities based on what we’ve learned in class. The Festival runs from 4-7 PM on Tuesday, Feb. 20th. Students can sign up for one-hour time slots during that time period. Questions? The goal of the STEM Festival is to bring science, engineering and mathematics to life by assembling experienced STEM exhibitors to provide an afternoon full of hands-on activities.

Rockwell Tour with Project Lead the Way
This tour is part of a series for high school students focused on sharing engineering based careers at Creative Corridor companies. Students hear from professionals engaged in open-ended problem solving and the world of engineering design process using innovative technology and creative software. Topics covered include sustainability, mechatronics, forces, structures, aerodynamics, digital electronics and circuit design, manufacturing, research and the environment from an engineering angle.
The Rockwell tour RSVP’s are due with this month’s newsletter. Unfortunately, they do not accept late registrations. All participants must be U.S. citizens, and students age 18 or older must bring a valid driver’s license or passport.

Kaleidoscope Series at the Williams Center for the Arts- "The Three Little Pigs."
Please note that this performance is at the Williams Center in Oelwein.
Theatre IV's "Three Little Pigs" is a lighthearted musical with a twist on the classic tale. In this adaptation, the Wolf is not evil, but misunderstood. The Three Little Pigs are very frightened of the Wolf and don't want to be friends. The Wolf wants to be their friend and decides to invite them to his birthday party.
