Principal's Message
Greetings Fir Grove Families!
In December, we gave a away 10 bikes and helmets to some lucky Kindergarten, First and Second Graders. These students were randomly chosen because they had perfect attendance and/or only 1 tardy for November and December.
In March, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Graders can win a chance at a bike and helmet.
Thank you to Washington County Bicycle Transportation Coalition (WashCo BTC) for providing the bikes and helmets through their annual Adopt-A-Bike program.
This spring, students in grades 3 – 5 in Fir Grove will take the state tests (Smarter Balanced) in English Language Arts and Mathematics. English language learners will also take the English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA).
In addition to content standards, these assessments are designed to measure critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. The test results provide you, our schools, our district and the state with information about how well we are preparing our students for their next steps including college and career readiness.
Our students will take these tests once between March and June 2018.
House Bill 2655 permits parents and adult students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting a form to the school the student attends. The school shall provide any student who is exempted from a state test with supervised study time while other students are testing.

Lastly, we want to thank you for your continued support and collaboration in your child’s education. It truly takes a village to raise a child, and we are so grateful to be in this village with you. We make a great team.
Happy Holidays to you and your family,
Erin Miles

Technology with Mrs. Cody
Here is what’s happening in the Fir Grove Technology classes: The kids are discovering, playing, and learning many concepts, including keyboarding, a very beneficial life-skill. During the first 20 minutes of Tech time, students may choose to use any of the many practice sites available to us. Fifth graders have found several excellent and fun keyboarding websites for us to use.
Kindergarteners are mastering the use of the website, Starfall, to learn letter sounds and actual reading. Kindergarteners catch on quickly.
Students are also given opportunities to experience strategy and logic activities. Ask your child if they’ve ever done a Tangram, played Lineum or 40xEscape. All of these offer exercises in building brain muscle memory and problem solving.
It’s exciting to see how brave your children are as they acquire new skills in Technology.
Start the Day (and the Year) Right!
Make giving your kids a healthy breakfast every day one of your New Year’s resolutions.
If you’re short on time in the morning or your kids aren’t hungry when they wake up, send them to school for breakfast. Healthy food choices are available every morning in the cafeteria for ALL students. We cannot wait to see them there!
Help your kids to make this semester a success - encourage them to eat breakfast!
