How Australia was involved

Australians Prime Minister, Andrew Fisher, promised Britain that we would support them. Australia had a population of less than 5 Million people and we sent 324,000 people overseas, many were killed and wounded.

Australia's involvement in the Great War included the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force landing at Rabaul on 11 September 1914 and then taking possession of German New Guinea on 17th September 1914.

On 25 April 1915 ANZAC, Britain, and France landed at Gallipoli. This began a campaign that ended with the evacuation of troops on 19 and 20 December 1915.

In 1916 and 1917 losses on the Western Front were heavy and gains were small.

The impact on Australians at home

World War 1 was important with the impact of Australians at home because it made Australia what it is today, it has brought out nation together as a whole for the first time.

It has also impacted the economy, government and society, the women had to replace men and work in the workforce but were not paid as well.

Significance of ANZAC day for Australians

It is very important to Australians because it marks the anniversary of the first major action fought by ANZAC. The ANZACS were set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. That plan did not work as ANZAC had lost because the Turks had shot them before they could make it to the other side.
