Message from the Principal

As we enter the last few weeks of the school year, I always like to reflect on how the year went. This year, not so much! However, all kidding aside, this has been a year to remember. I am choosing to remember the good things. Things like how parents stepped up into the role of teacher during a global pandemic. Educators took on new roles and responsibilities that they were never prepared to take. And how students persevered through this difficult time to focus on their continued growth and education. There have been many "firsts" during this last academic school year. Many of them we would like to forget, but many of them will make us better parents, teachers, students, and community members.

Over the summer, I encourage you to do several things. First of all, please take some time as a family to regroup, relax, and rejuvenate. It has been a stressful year and this is your chance to recharge your batteries to be ready in August. Secondly, spend some time reading. Read as a family, read as an individual, and encourage your children to read. Some of the academic losses that our students suffered due to this odd year can simply be counteracted by getting back to the basics. Lastly, take care of yourself. You are no good to anyone (spouse, significant other, children, etc.) if you are not in a good space. The emotional toll this year has taken on all of us is yet to be determined. We all need to be at our best mental state as we go through summer and enter the next school year.

I am excited to spend some time with my family this summer, but even more excited to plan for the next school year. It is my goal to try and get back to some semblance of normalcy for our students. Of course, my hands will be tied for some of these things. But, as much as I can control, I will do so for the betterment of our students. Please enjoy your summer and look for our summer newsletter sometime in July. See you all soon!

You may have your child bring a check to school (made out to Oakdale), cash in an envelope with your child's name or visit MySchoolBucks.com to deposit directly into your child's account. Thanks for your very prompt attention to this matter.

Together A Greater Good (TAGG)

Congratulations to Mrs. Schmitz's 6th grade class for winning this week's Golden TAGG Award! They each received a golden rolo and will hold the coveted Golden TAGG Ticket for the week. Their class raised over $52 in just one week by TAGGing their receipts!

Our individual gift card winner who was randomly drawn for this week was Blake R. in Mrs. Clark's 4th grade class.

The big news of the week is that Oakdale reached our goal of raising $1000 through TAGG! That means a special celebration for all students! Thank you to all the parents who TAGGed receipts. If you have not participated yet, please do so. Oakdale can earn money year-round by simply TAGGing receipts from participating businesses. There's nothing to it. This is a great opportunity to raise money for your school and support local businesses as well.

Finally, we have one more week left and one more Golden Ticket to award. We already have four classrooms who have reached their goal of $100, let's see if we can get everyone past their goal! The students will earn a celebration and the teachers will earn a gift card for reaching that goal. And remember, you can TAGG all year long! Keep TAGGing, parents!

Summer Learning Opportunities

Throughout the school year, as part of Westside’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process, students are assessed in reading and provided with strong instruction to support their needs. To engage families and extend the learning for students, we are sharing ways in which you can support your child with their reading. As we enter into summer, it is important to encourage practice in the area of reading so that students maintain the skills they learned this year.

This link: https://tinyurl.com/ue2tbc6v outlines opportunities to continue learning with and without technology. Included are links to various activities you can do with your child, as well as reading programs available in the community and some website/app recommendations. The top priority this summer is simply having your child read every day. This can include times when someone reads to or with them.

Year End Reminders

End of the School Year is Fast Approaching!

Please have your child check around the house for any school property that may have been borrowed during the school year and return it to school. Items to be searching for include library books, text books, calculators, templates, etc.
