Oakdale Elementary's Monthly Newsletter | May 2021
Message from the Principal
Over the summer, I encourage you to do several things. First of all, please take some time as a family to regroup, relax, and rejuvenate. It has been a stressful year and this is your chance to recharge your batteries to be ready in August. Secondly, spend some time reading. Read as a family, read as an individual, and encourage your children to read. Some of the academic losses that our students suffered due to this odd year can simply be counteracted by getting back to the basics. Lastly, take care of yourself. You are no good to anyone (spouse, significant other, children, etc.) if you are not in a good space. The emotional toll this year has taken on all of us is yet to be determined. We all need to be at our best mental state as we go through summer and enter the next school year.
I am excited to spend some time with my family this summer, but even more excited to plan for the next school year. It is my goal to try and get back to some semblance of normalcy for our students. Of course, my hands will be tied for some of these things. But, as much as I can control, I will do so for the betterment of our students. Please enjoy your summer and look for our summer newsletter sometime in July. See you all soon!

Elementary Band and Strings Concerts
Band and String Families, we are excited to announce our district-wide end of the year celebration concerts! Each performer may have 4 guests in attendance with them at these events! Info about safety requirements and practices will be sent home as the dates approach. Please add the appropriate date and time for your student to your family calendars and reserve the night for this event! We can not wait to gather together for a live performance to celebrate all that these students have accomplished as musicians throughout this unprecedented year!

Together A Greater Good (TAGG)
Our individual gift card winner who was randomly drawn for this week was Blake R. in Mrs. Clark's 4th grade class.
The big news of the week is that Oakdale reached our goal of raising $1000 through TAGG! That means a special celebration for all students! Thank you to all the parents who TAGGed receipts. If you have not participated yet, please do so. Oakdale can earn money year-round by simply TAGGing receipts from participating businesses. There's nothing to it. This is a great opportunity to raise money for your school and support local businesses as well.
Finally, we have one more week left and one more Golden Ticket to award. We already have four classrooms who have reached their goal of $100, let's see if we can get everyone past their goal! The students will earn a celebration and the teachers will earn a gift card for reaching that goal. And remember, you can TAGG all year long! Keep TAGGing, parents!
Summer Learning Opportunities
Throughout the school year, as part of Westside’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process, students are assessed in reading and provided with strong instruction to support their needs. To engage families and extend the learning for students, we are sharing ways in which you can support your child with their reading. As we enter into summer, it is important to encourage practice in the area of reading so that students maintain the skills they learned this year.
This link: https://tinyurl.com/ue2tbc6v outlines opportunities to continue learning with and without technology. Included are links to various activities you can do with your child, as well as reading programs available in the community and some website/app recommendations. The top priority this summer is simply having your child read every day. This can include times when someone reads to or with them.
