A Message from Principal Bame

Dear Laurel Park Families,

Thank you for celebrating our teachers last week with such generosity and kindness. They truly felt spoiled with kind words and tokens of appreciation. Our PTA provided staff mini-head and neck massages, a delicious nacho bar, and donut breakfast. More than anything, our school staff value your partnership.

It's that time of year again! Save time and money by ordering school supply kits through the PTA. The PTA has worked with teachers and our trusted partner EPI to ensure the supplies included in the kits are exactly what is on the teachers' supply lists. Plus, the kits are delivered to your child's classroom for the first day of school.

Visit and enter code LAU074 to find your child's grade for next year

Thank you for supporting our school!

Kind regards,

Principal Raleigh Bame

Saludos cordiales,

Director Raleigh Bame

AIG Updates ~ May

Spring 2022

Dear 5th Grade AIG and Talent Development Parents/Legal Guardians,

Fifth grade students will soon transition from the elementary school setting to middle school. The structure of the middle school day and service delivery for students in the Talent Development program and students identified as Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) is different from the elementary school experience.

Talent Development (TD) Transition: As middle school TD students transition to 6th grade, their unique needs will be met through a variety of potential enrichment and learning options. TD students are not identified as gifted; however, they will continue to receive support that may include pull out or push in grouping with AIG identified students, extensions for classroom during independent work time, collaboration with the classroom teachers and flexible grouping which is approved by the principal. The middle school SBCGE will continue to collect and monitor classroom data and observations to help determine AIG eligibility for all TD students.

Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Transition: As middle school AIG students transition to 6th grade, their unique needs will be met through a variety of potential enrichment and learning options. Service options include pull out or push in grouping with other AIG identified students, extensions for classroom during independent work time, collaboration with the classroom teachers and flexible grouping which is approved by the principal. Parents will receive copies of students’ middle school Differentiated Education Plans (DEPs) in the fall. This plan outlines specific instructional strategies and services offered for each child. The middle school AIG Teacher is available for individual meetings with parents and students upon request.

Regardless of AIG identification, high performing middle school students will have access to rigorous courses.

The Middle School AIG teacher collaborates and plans with classroom teachers to create appropriate differentiated instruction for identified and Talent Development students as well as monitor the progress of the students.

Feel free to contact the AIG Teacher and/or counselor at the middle school for additional information regarding school specific programming.

Social Learning Updates ~ May

Happy Spring from Social Learning Class!

In 4th and 5th grade, we will be having a virtual field trip with the North Carolina Museum of Art about Social Emotional Learning in Art! I'm excited to be able to collaborate with NCMA. It will be fun to see the kids put their perspective taking skills to work. In 2nd and 3rd grade, we have started talking about responsibility and focusing on what we need to focus on. We have an unthinkable called "BLAME-O" that points to other people, but when you are pointing at someone else, 4 fingers also point back at you.

In Kindergarten and 1st we are also learning about focusing and self-control. We've talked about "Was Funny Once" who makes us act too silly or silly at the wrong time. It's been fun to have the weather get warmer, but it has also made our minds a little more distracted. In Social Learning class, we are trying to find some distractor blasters that can help us focus!

PTA ~ Important Dates to Note

  • May 20th - PTA Family Movie Night Event, 6:00 - 10:00 pm
  • June 4th - Kindergarten Playdate (PTA Sponsored)

Box Tops is now mostly digital, one has to download the Box Tops app, shop as you normally would, then use the app to scan your store receipt within 14 days of purchase. The app will identify Box Tops products on your receipt and automatically credit your school’s earnings online. Twice a year, our school will receive a check.

There are still products out there that require you to cut out the box tops, we will collect those for as long as we have to. I believe PTA Teacher Reps has communicated with Teachers that the boxtops can be dropped in our PTA Mailbox

Feel free to use any of the images in the next Penguin Press and place the following link which shows families how to use the Box Tops App.
