Take a Taste Tuesday
This week we have reached the letter “K.” Miss Grace found a very exotic fruit at Sprouts this week called a Kiwano or horned melon, jelly melon or blowfish fruit. It has spikes on the outside of its orange skin and the inside is green with lots of tiny seeds – like a cucumber – but it tastes a little like a banana. Kiwano is a popular snack in Africa, Australia and New Zealand. It looks like it is from outer space and was even featured in an episode of Star Trek. Kiwano fruit is very low in calories and very high in Vitamin C. You eat the seeds – just like you do with a pomegranate. The seeds and flesh are great eaten raw or added to salad dressings or marinades. Kiwanos are very expensive – about $4 per fruit and not available all year round.
Mrs. Beckham’s second grade class was very excited to try this funny looking fruit. We thought it tasted a lot like kiwi with a hint of unripe banana. About half of the class liked it and half did not. The gelatinous inside was weirdly gooey!

Your Child’s Immunization Records
Did you know that you can access the entire immunization record that the school has on file for your child? All you have to do is sign in to the Parent Portal. This is the same website that you go to update your child’s information at the beginning of the school year: parentportal.pisd.edu
Once you have logged in to the main screen, if you look on the right side of the screen and scroll down near the bottom you will see “Immunization Summary.” You can print your child’s school immunization record from this screen.
Free Vision Care for Students – Lion’s Club
The Lion’s Club is sponsoring a free vision clinic for all Plano ISD students at Sigler Elementary School on Saturday, January 28, 2017.
The clinic is meant to serve students whose family income falls below 200% of the federal income guidelines. In addition, it is meant to serve students without insurance coverage for vision care.
Students will receive a free examination and be fitted for free glasses on the same day. The glasses will be delivered about 4-6 weeks later. The parent must attend with the student. Sigler Elementary is located at 1400 Janwood Dr., Plano TX. 75075.
There are limited appointments available. If you are interested in having your child evaluated, please contact Miss Grace at 469-752-0609 or at Judith.grace@pisd.edu as soon as possible.
Free Vision Care for Students – VSP coupons
Miss Grace can also provide a coupon for free vision care which includes an examination and glasses (limited frame choices). These coupons are for families with limited or no insurance. The same income guidelines apply.
Friendly Reminders -
As we move towards the 2nd school semester, we encourage you to help us teach your child independence by limiting the number of times you join him/her for lunch.
Science Fair at Carlisle will be Thursday, January 12, 2017.
Please remember that conferences with teachers should be scheduled in advance. Before or after school or during the teacher’s lunch/recess duties are the busiest times for them. They are responsible for supervision of children. Please call or send a note so the teacher can set up a time to discuss concerns with you when he/she can give you the attention you deserve. Below are the state and district policies.
School Board Policy GKC (Local), Community Relations, Visitors to the School: “Visits to individual classrooms during instructional time shall be permitted only with the principal’s and teacher’s approval and such visits shall not be permitted if their duration or frequency interferes with the delivery of instruction or disruptions the normal school environment.”
In the event of winter weather please refer to the PISD web page at www.pisd.edu for school closings. School closings will also be listed on all local radio and TV stations.
