4Points Academy Student Accepted Into John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Program
Congrats to 4PA student, Etienne Isidore, who recently got accepted into the John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Program! It is an acknowledgement of his hard work and a great supporting academic program, as he continues to perform several grade levels above his age level.
Etienne is in his third year with 4Points Academy and the school has provided an environment that is small enough where the teachers have the bandwidth to closely monitor his performance and tailor the work and their instruction to best motivate and challenge him. Our teachers are not concerned with teaching to a particular test, and consequently they can do what they do best, TEACH. Our goal is to bring the best out of our students by providing a caring, stimulating, and challenging environment.
We are proud of Etienne and wish him continued success!
Creating a Stimulating Environment for Academically Advanced Students
What it takes to teach gifted learners well is actually a little common sense. It begins with the premise that each child should come to school to stretch and grow daily. It includes the expectation that the measure of progress and growth is competition with oneself rather than competition against others. It resides in the notion that educators understand key concepts, principles and skills of subject domains, and present those in ways that cause highly able students to wonder and grasp, and extend their reach. And it envisions schooling as an escalator on which students continually progress, rather than a series of stairs, with landings on which advanced learners consistently wait. Renowned educator, Carol Ann Tomlinson, Ed.D, writes this insightful article on teaching advanced students. She lays out several good instructional strategies. These include:
- Good curriculum and instruction for gifted learners begins with good curriculum and instruction.
- Good teaching for gifted learners is paced in response to the student's individual needs.
- Good teaching for gifted learners happens at a higher "degree of difficulty" than for many students their age.
