This week (as told by the Oak Room Kindergartners)...

Mick's mom and Reed's mom came in for their cultural tradition. Someone died at the park. They put a picture up of him. We learned a new word today--saw.

We made cube trains. We had Writing Workshop before snack. We played sight word bingo.

We had Community Gathering in the music room. The first graders went on a field trip so it was just us! Pascale showed everyone things in the Community Room.

Elbi's parents came in. It was a short day. We had a long exploration.

Carmen's aunt came and shared her book. Since the grown ups have a lot of meetings we are having a lot of short, short days. The teachers gave parents their reports.

This week in literacy (and things to do at home)

In Reading Workshop we asked questions to push our thinking as we read and learn. We did this by asking questions like, “How does this work?” and “Why does this happen?” We also worked on looking closely at the pictures, naming all the parts that we see, and then we think about how all of the parts fit together. With our partners we asked questions about the pictures, such as “What part do you want to describe first?", "What seems to be the most important part?", "What do you want to say about this?” We also discovered there's a pattern we can follow (we've been working on patterns in math) when we read books: first read the pictures, then read the words, and then read the pictures again to help us understand all that we can from that page! Try out some of the questions or the pattern at home!

In Writing Workshop we continued to write true stories from our lives that readers really want to read. We worked on putting spaces between our words and periods at the end.

We would love to have morning shares of any true stories your child works on with you at home!

This week in math (and things to do at home)

This week in math we continued our work with patterns by introducing cube trains! We connected 12 Unifix cubes to make trains. We discussed how some trains were patterns and some trains were not. We know a train has a pattern when we see a part that repeats over and over again. We continued to play What's Missing as well as Sorting Attribute Blocks.

Point out and look for patterns around your home or neighborhood with your child!

It was an exciting week in Project Time! Many grown ups came in and shared their family cultural traditions, including Chinese dumplings, art projects with sticks, quilt making, English muffin pizzas, the game "I Spy", schnitzel, and dominos & English tea!

THANK YOU TO ALL THE FAMILIES THAT HAVE SHARED SO FAR!!!! It has been a wonderful experience.
