When an item is copyright protected but the copyright expires. This occurs for one of the three reasons: expiration, donation, or created with public money.
Benefit: To give to the public
Freeware
Copyrighted work that can be copied, used, and given for free. Example: iTunes.
Benefit: Money is made through in app purchases and ads.
Shareware
Copyrighted material that one can use for free for a limited time. Example: a software trial.
Benefit: the user is given the opportunity to try the software before purchasing.
All rights reserved
Allows the purchaser to use software according to the details in the license agreement. Example: Microsoft Word
Benefit: To look at other peoples work without getting charged for copyright.
Open Source
Software that includes the source code with the idea that someone can improve it. Example: Google Chrome.
Benefit: Ability to improve software.
