A Word From Mrs. Loor
They say time flies when you're having fun! We had a whole bunch of that this past week. Students enjoyed Valentine's Day celebrations in their classrooms. The third graders had their instrument trials. Students were treated to a puppet show in Spanish and French for additional world language exposure.
The mural is finally done! A huge thank you to Mrs. Breznak and Ms. Terkovich for planning, organizing and executing this fantastic student-centered project. Thank you again to the PTO for funding our supplies and supporting our vision. Next time you're at Franklin, ask your child which part of the mural they painted! Be on the lookout in tonight's PTO blast for a wonderful slideshow of the whole process from beginning to end.
I'm looking forward to our school play, The Jungle Book Kids! I hope to see you there! As a reminder, please sign up for Mrs. Burr's P.E. Showcase! Click HERE for more information and to RSVP to join your child's P.E. class.
Lastly, I am deeply grateful for the the generous PTO donation which will turn our cafeteria into a multi-purpose space with the addition of a projector, drop-down screen and audio speakers. Staff and students will be able to use the cafeteria for grade level presentations, class meetings, and collaborative projects. We're excited at the unlimited possibilities!
I hope you enjoy these extra couple of days off!
With Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Loor
On the Same Page: Library News from Mrs. Mills
This week our 3rd graders received their own student dictionaries through the generosity of the Summit-New Providence Rotary Club. The Rotary Club's Dictionary Project's origins are over 30 years old, yet the national program was established in 2002. Franklin's 3rd graders were truly appreciative of this gift and spent their library time this week searching for words and reading other facts that are featured in a student dictionary. One class broke into song when they discovered the lyrics to the National Anthem were printed in the back! Thank you to the Rotary Club for their continued support!
Franklin will be celebrating a full week of Read Across America from Monday, February 27 - Friday, March 3. We have a great week planned with themed clothing, guests readers, a Vocabulary parade, and a Book Character Potato gallery. Please see the flyer for more information and links. Just email if you have any questions! (jmills@summit.k12.nj.us)
Finally, if your student is a Battle of the Books participant, please remind them that, although the weather can be mild, their attendance at Battle practices are important for the next month. Our building battles will run mid-March and our district battles will be during the final week of March.

TEAM UP FOR HEALTHY EATING!
Did you know that Franklin Elementary School is a USDA Team Nutrition School? As a “team,” Franklin School is working towards healthier school nutrition and snacking.
Team Franklin needs your help! Please be mindful of the student snack choices that are sent in on a daily basis. Many students are bringing candy and other unhealthy snacks to be consumed both in the classroom and lunchroom.
Snacks of minimal nutritional value, those that are high in sugar and fat and those with empty calories (i.e. candy, cookies, gushers, chips, sugary drinks etc.) are all foods of minimal nutritional value, and are not in keeping with our District Nutrition Policy #8505.
In addition, many candies contain nuts, or are processed in a plant with nuts, and put students with nut allergies at risk for exposure.
Fruits and vegetables, low fat yogurts and cheeses, hummus, popcorn, low sugar snack bars, and whole grain crackers are great alternatives and help establish healthy eating habits.
For health-related questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Zanelli, our school nurse. Her email is azanelli@summit.k12.nj.us. You can also visit the Summit Public Schools Virtual Health Office for additional information.
