From the Helm
Keeping the Crew up to Date! Volume 2 Issue 9 - 10/16/22
Greetings Clipper Nation!
This past week we had our first PSAT/Virtual day. We have developed a list of ideas to make the day smoother for testing, especially the dismissal. We appreciate your kindness and willingness to work with us as we experienced this for the first time. We anticipate a similar process in the spring when Juniors take the SATs.
I know it is hard to believe, but we are just 15 days away from the end of the first term. As you review your student's grades and check on their progress, please continue encouraging them to stay strong and get their grades as high as possible over the next 15 days.
We have a lot going on next week. Throughout the week, guidance will work with seniors and their families on college applications. For more details, see the information in the Senior section of the From the Helm Newsletter. On Wednesday the 19th, we encourage everyone to wear orange to promote kindness and discourage bullying. To celebrate College Application Week, we encourage everyone to wear a college shirt on Thursday, the 20th.
Please also remember that next week is a four-day week for students, with an early dismissal on 10/20 and no school on 10/21.

Late to School
If you know your student will be late for school, please send them with a note so we can excuse their lateness. Students start earning referrals on the fourth lateness to school.
Maryland State-Mandated Tobacco Survey
Parking Permits
Update - Starting in October students will receive warnings if they are parking without a parking permit. Later in the month if students are still parking without a parking permit stickers will be placed on windshields.
Students enrolled in AP Courses
For students enrolled in a semester one or full year AP course: While AP exams will not be until May, the deadline to register and pay for exams is quickly approaching. If a student plans to take an AP exam, they need to complete two steps. First, they need to indicate they are taking the exam in their College Board AP classroom account. Then, they need to go to MyPaymentsPlus and pay the fee for the exam. The regular cost of each exam is $97, and the cost for FARMS students is $20. Students need to complete this process for each AP exam they plan on taking. If a student does not plan on taking the AP exam for their AP course, they should go to their College Board AP classroom account and indicate that they are not. The deadline for registering AND paying is Friday, October 28th. There is a $40 late fee for registrations after October 28th. October 28th is the deadline for semester 1 and full year courses only. Semester two sign-ups will take place in February. For questions, please contact the testing coordinator, Ms. Cook.

College Essay Support
We have good news for seniors who are working on their college essays! Through the Title IV grant, Ms. Cahall and Mrs. Taylor will be available to review your college essays and provide feedback starting on Monday, October 3rd – Saturday, December 31st.
Here’s how it works: You will need to email the teacher you would like to work with letting them know you would like for them to review your essay. They will then send you information so that you can upload your essay, the writing prompt or question that you are responding to along with any questions or comments about the essay you have sent them. The teacher will add you in an assignment on Google Classroom where all communication about your essay will occur.
Contact information for Participating Teachers:
Mrs. Chelsea Taylor: chtaylor@wcboe.org
Ms. Jennifer Cahall: jcahall@wcboe.org
Of course if there is another teacher you would like to have review your essays you are welcome to contact them, but Mrs. Taylor and Ms. Cahall are the teachers that are part of this project. They are looking forward to reading your essays and supporting you through this process!

How to Stay in the Know?
The best way to stay in the know is to make sure we have accurate information on file. Please look over all the information on the Student Personal Data and Enrollment Information Form as this is the information we currently have on file for you. Make any corrections to the form in blue. If you need additional space for emergency contact use a separate sheet of paper. Sign the back of the form and return it to the school. If you prefer to fill out a new form you can find a copy on our website.
