BEHAVIOR AND CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT CORNER:
INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES CORNER: RUNNING RECORDS
Here is a video that is a great example of how to administer a running record with a student. It is not just about capturing the reading but the conversation before and after the reading that can be powerful!!
Information received through running records...
Reading strategies used at difficulty
Student's self-monitoring
An accuracy rate
An error rate
A self-correction rate
Running records can be used to:
Document reading progress over time
Help inform instruction
Match students to appropriate books
It’s important to let students know what their Reading Goals are so they can take ownership of their learning. Some goals might be... 1:1 match, check the picture for clues, go back and reread, get your mouth ready for the first sound, I can make my reading sound like talking (fluency), etc.
JCPS On-going Running Record Guidelines
All students in grades K-1 should have at least 4 running records per quarter.
All students in grades 2-5 should have at least 3 running records per quarter.
If a student is reading below grade level in grades 2-5, he/she should have at least 4 running records per quarter.
All K-5 students should have observation/anecdotal notes.
Easy text level: 95%-100%
Instructional text level: 90%-94%
Hard text level: 89% and below
5 Ways to uphold JCPS Running Record Guidelines
Day 2 of your Guided Reading groups
Day 3 of your Guided Reading groups
As “Morning Work” students can be silently reading. Pull 1-2 students back to your table and take a running record on the book/article that was read the day before.
After “Pack & Stack” at the end of the day while you are waiting for the dismissal procedures pull 1-2 students to your table to take a running record on a book/article read earlier that day.
Hold a student in from recess to take a running record before dismissing them. (This should only take a few minutes.)
