The State Writing Test is this week!

Students across Texas will be taking the STAAR Writing Test on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. They will have 4 hours to finish an essay and answer multiple choice questions each day. They will be asked to write an expository essay one day, and a personal narrative on the other day. We plan to be done by 12:30 each day, go to the cafeteria for lunch, and then have recess. We will still have Specials on both STAAR testing days, 4th grade students will go from 1:45-2:35.


Please make sure your child gets a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast in the morning. The PTA will provide a simple snack and water, but feel free to send in a snack with your child. They will be allowed a snack break during the testing time.

River Place Talent Show!

The time has come!! The curtain will rise for the 2013-2014 Titan Talent Show on May 28th and 29th from 6-8pm! Any River Place student in Kindergarten through 5th grade is welcome to audition. Performances can include magic, dance, vocals, gymnastics, instrumentals and just about anything else your STAR can dream up!

The DEADLINE for submission for ALL acts will be Tuesday, April 15th, 2014. Please include a USB /CD with music AND hard copy of lyrics along with this consent form. USB or CD will not be returned. All lyrics must be age appropriate and approved. Piano and instrumentals are excluded from submission of USB/CD and lyrics.

• Each act needs to be UNDER TWO MINUTES and age appropriate(no exceptions)

• USB/CD submitted must be the correct length of act (UNDER TWO MINUTES)

• Only 1 act per child

Closed Try Outs (No family or friends inside MPR) will be held on May 15th and 16th, 2014. All performance feedback will be in written form. For the try outs:

• EACH PERFORMER MUST BE IN COSTUME FOR TRYOUTS -if performer is not dressed in costume their act will not be approved for show

• Costumes must be approved at rehearsal (must follow school dress code)

• Changes to performances will not be allowed after tryouts

• Sign up for try outs will be available on RPE PTA site at a later date

Below you will find a parent consent form. Every performer (whether individual or in group) MUST turn in a consent form, lyrics and USB by April 15th. LISD Back Pack Program Donations-March 24-April 4th

RPE's 2nd and 3rd grade brownie troop is collecting food items for the LISD Backpack program from March 24-April 4. The Backpack Program provides kid-friendly meals for students in need at RPE and throughout the district. Collection boxes will be near the front office. Please see the list below for needed items. Thanks for helping the Girl Scouts with this food drive!

Most Needed Food Items

  • Large and small cans of Spaghettios/Ravioli or similar products (pop-top preferred)
  • Beanee-weenees / Pork and Beans (pop-top preferred)
  • Hormel Completes Kids microwave meals, sandwich

makers, or similar kid friendly microwavable meals

  • Canned tuna/chicken (pop-top cans, packages, or kits)
  • Kid friendly flavored soup/stew (pop-top preferred)
  • Small cans of vegetables (pop-top preferred)
  • Cereal (individually boxed servings)
  • Individual packaged snack items (goldfish, raisins, crackers, pretzels, trail mix, rice cakes, nuts, etc.)
  • Easy Mac (individual serving mac & cheese)
  • Microwave popcorn
  • Peanut butter (plastic jars or individual servings)
  • Jelly (no glass)
  • Boxed juice (preferably not soft pouches)

*All food items should be non-perishable, kid friendly & non-refrigerated. No glass please.

This Week's Curriculum

Taylor's News!

This week in Math and Science:

Math - Later in the week we will begin reviewing all skills taught this year by starting with a review of decimals and fractions. We will not have math homework this week due to two days of STAAR testing.

Science - Our next unit of study will be Ecology. This week we will begin learning about the many important vocabulary words for this unit.

Social Studies- We will begin writing journal entries as if we were members of the "Old Three Hundred"~ the first 300 families that settled in Texas.

Stern's News!

This week in Language Arts:

READING: This week we will be reviewing the plot and climax of a story. We will discuss genre's we have read this year and share book reviews.

WRITING: This week we will share our favorite writing essays and receive specific peer compliments. We will begin to look closer at imaginative writing and create some of our own.

SPELLING: There will be no spelling test this week. We will review the spelling skills we have learned so far this year and create a "Spelling Rules" poster to list those we deem most important.

EXTRA TICKETS!!! Students will still get 5 extra tickets in class for putting up a blog post about their experiences on Spring Break. Feel free to upload 1 picture of the event please.

No Homework this week due to STAAR Testing!!!

All homework can be accessed online through our class websites (see homework links above). We will have 2 pages for Math and 2 pages for Language Arts each week. If you are unable to print the pages, students are encouraged to put answers on regular notebook paper and bring in the answers on Friday. If you won't have access to a computer during the week, please let your homeroom teacher know early in the week. ;)

Class Blogs!

Students can access their homeroom's class blog from home. The blog gives them an opportunity to practice writing and communication skills in an ever expanding digital world. We have discussed the importance of students using their best "netiquette"! Manners online are just as important as in person. "Treat others how you want to be treated!"
