Wordly Wise: We will continue practicing the words from Unit 5 next week. We will continue going over classroom activities and strategies that should become routine by the end of the year! We will take our test over this unit on Friday. Once change will be that students will take their test online through Canvas. This will help them by giving them immediate feedback on how they did and will give them practice in online testing in preparation for ISTEP+ and middle school.
Writing: We will be reading the book A Writer's Notebook by Ralph Fletcher. This book discusses the many ways writers get ideas. We will read and discuss these ways, then students will practice strategies in their own writer's notebooks.
Math
We will cover sections 2-7 through 2-10 next week. Topics will include: converting units of time, multiplicative comparisons, multiplicative comparison number stories, and classifying triangles. The unit 2 test is tentatively set for November 14. Sometimes I have to tweak the schedule if we get behind, but I like to give parents an idea of when to expect it to happen.
Science
We will be studying scientific method in science. I will introduce the concept on Monday, we will do a fun investigation with pumpkins on Tuesday and Wednesday (please let me know if your child has a pumpkin allergy!), and will have a short quiz on Friday.

Canvas
Canvas is the learning management system for Zionsville Schools. Mine is constantly evolving, but it has general information about our classroom, learning resources for different subjects, and will be a place where students complete assessments and activities. If you do not already have a parent observer account, I would strongly encourage you to set one up!

Xtra Math
This is an online math fact fluency program. It assesses math fact fluency, assigns students problems that they have not mastered, and allows them to practice until they are fluent. Knowing their math facts will make their lives much easier as we begin studying more complex math concepts this year. This does not need to be done at home, but I did send home information with directions to log in so you can track your child's progress if you want to or so they can log in if they want to if they have to miss school.
Typing.com
We will spend some time in class practicing keyboarding skills, but this program is also a great option for them if they get done early with their work at school or if they want to practice at home. Since we will be typing papers and taking ISTEP+ online this year, knowing where the keys are will help them be more efficient in their writing.

Snack
Drinks: Clear water only. Please no flavored or colored drinks. It is guaranteed that a water bottle will break or spill at some point in the year. It is way easier to clean up if we just need to let things dry out than if it is colored or sticky.
Food: Students can bring anything that is relatively healthy and easy to eat. Crackers, fruit, vegetables, granola bars, etc. are great options. Please stay away from nuts due to allergies and junk food (chips, cookies, candy, etc.)
