Matthew & Reese (grade 6), Chase & Rachel (grade 5), Wes & Sierra (grade 4), Brian & Reese (grade 3), Bryce & Isabelle (grade 2), Oliver & Khianna (grade 1) and Issac & Emma (kindergarten). Congratulate them on being such positive influences in our school family!

Caring Character Trait

Caring is our PAWS-itive character trait for the month of December! Monthly Character traits are defined and students displaying traits are presented with a PAW. Assigned students will collect them from classrooms each morning. PAWS will be announced during lunches on Wednesday. During lunch on Wednesday, students will have an opportunity to display their PAW on the Principal’s 100 Board. When there are 10 in a row on the board, those 10 students spin the prize wheel for individual incentives. Those individual incentives include VIP lunch with 2 friends, Cafeteria Snack Coupon, Pick a Prize Coupon, Gaming Room with 2 friends. At the end of each month, students will also receive the designated Character bead to acknowledge their PAWS-itive Traits.

What is our PBiS Goal This Year?

Our overall goal during the 2018-2019 school year is to have 80% or more of our kids receive one or fewer minor/major behavior referrals this school year. As of November 30, 2018, 443 out of our 489 students have received one or fewer behavior referrals for discipline. That means that 91% of our students at Maplewood Elementary are consistently doing the right thing! Out of the 46 students that have received more than one referral, only 23 have more than two. Our students are making great choices and learning quickly to avoid repeating bad ones.

First Trimester Celebration

Since we are met the goal of 80% of our students receiving one or fewer behavior referrals during the first trimester, we celebrated by hosting a movie and popcorn day the day before Thanksgiving break on Tuesday, November 20, 2018. A big thank you to our Celebration Crew (Mrs. Longo, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Delycure, Mrs. Sansom, Mrs. Barickman and Mrs. Higgins) who organized the day for our students to enjoy! We're already looking forward to our second trimester celebration!

When Can PBiS Happen?

When appropriate behaviors are displayed, faculty and staff will give the students a “Tiger Ticket” and verbally tell them specifically why they are receiving the ticket. The student will write their name on the ticket. The student is then responsible for entering their ticket into the drawing in the cafeteria. Faculty and staff are encouraged to indicate their name on the ticket as well. The ticket containers will be kept in the main office and then brought to the cafeteria during the student’s lunches on Wednesdays. Students are encouraged to bring their tickets to the cafeteria and enter them into the drawing as they enter for lunch.

Our Students ROAR!

We LOVE having the opportunity to help our students succeed and we're very proud of them for repeatedly making the right choices. We hope you are as excited as we are about the great work that the students have been doing. Our recent SWPBiS evaluation confirms what we already know..... MES is PAWS-itively the best!

Food for Thought

The mission of the Food For Thought Project is to provide nutritious food (free of charge) for the weekend to those students who receive government funded free/reduced breakfast and lunches at school. We also offer it to any student at Maplewood Elementary School. Foods are selected that can be prepared by the students if needed. Proper nutrition on weekends has been shown to lead to improved attention and performance at the beginning of the school week.

If you would like your child/ren to receive this bag of food, please fill out this form and return it to school with your child in care of Erin Fonzo.

If you have any questions please contact: Ann Zurasky (814) 673-2302 /elizamegan782@gmail.com or Judy Smock (814) 671-3452

There is no cost to families for this service!
