Lion Leader Press
Calling all S-P-E-L-L-E-R-S! The Park Hill School District spelling bee will be held on
Saturday, February 23rd. Park Hill is now sponsoring its own spelling bee, so the winner of the district bee will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland (20 minutes from Washington DC), May 26-May 31. The top ten finishers will earn medals, and the top three students will receive trophies.
The event will begin Saturday morning at Park Hill South High School with a computerized spelling test. The results of the test will be used to select 60 students who will participate in the on-stage Spelling Bee in the Park Hill South High School Auditorium at 2:00 pm that same day.
All current Park Hill 5th through 8th graders are eligible, but students must sign up by
February 1st to participate. Register today at the link: http://tinyurl.com/PH2019spellingbee
or by going to the District website and selecting “spelling bee” under the Parent Resources section. You may also contact the Line Creek front office for assistance in registering online. Once you sign up, you will receive a copy of the spelling word study list by email.
Additionally, we are excited to announce the opportunity for you to attend spelling bee study sessions at 6 p.m. in the Board Room at Park Hill School District Office. The study sessions will be Wednesdays January 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, February 13th and 20th and Thursday February 7th. There is no sign-up necessary, just drop by if you are available. You can stay for five minutes or the whole time, whatever fits into your schedule and you can come to one or all sessions.
We look forward to seeing you at this exciting celebration of academic talent!
Park Hill Stars
The Park Hill Star recognition program was started in 2015 to celebrate support staff and teachers whose work is especially noteworthy.
The following is an overview of the Park Hill Star Program:
Our employees are the reason we are so successful here in the Park Hill School District, and we would like to recognize them for all they do for our students.
That is why we present the Park Hill Star award once a month to a pre-K or elementary teacher, a secondary teacher and a support employee.
Nominations are not being accepted at this time, but opportunities will re-open at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. Thanks to everyone who took the time to nominate a Park Hill Star this year!

Habit of the Month - Think Win-Win
This month your child(ren) will be learning about Habit 4: Think Win-Win.
Please read about this habit and share this habit at home.
Think Win-Win: I Win, You Win, We Win
It is a belief that there are enough good things for everyone; it is an abundant way of thinking. Think Win-Win is being happy for others when good things happen to them. As a parent, not everything is negotiable, but if you go into discussions with your child with a win-win mindset, you’ll find a lot less resistance.
Activity Ideas
1) Play a game with your child(ren) that has a definite winner. Explain how competition is okay when you play a game, but it is not okay in relationships. Discuss how tense it would be in your home if every situation had to have a winner. A better way to think is win-win. This means we think of solutions that we can all feel good about when there is a problem. The more we Think Win-Win, the fewer problems there will be. You may want to display a chart listing the days of the week. When someone is “caught” thinking win-win, he or she gets to write his or her name on the chart for that day.
2) Encourage win-win solutions to sibling disputes. Don’t always be the mediator; let them work out a solution and be sure to be lavish children with praise when they do.
3) Read Chapter 4 of The 7 Habits of Happy Kids book with your child and then complete the Parent’s Corner.
4) Think of an ongoing conflict you tend to have with your child (homework, cleaning his or her room, feeding the dog, putting gas in the car) and then discuss a win-win solution to the conflict. Write down the solution and then remind each other of it the next time the situation arises.
5) Remember not to compare your children in front of each other. Try not to say to Marcelo that “Juan always remembers to clear the table.” That’s win-lose thinking. Instead, just concentrate on praising Juan for a job well done. Marcelo will get the message.
