Where We Are n Place and Time
Great job to the students in Mr. Rasavage's class! These kids got into character to record their rap videos.
The kids also wrote scripts and created posters to represent themselves as their explorer. Their presentations were amazing! It was so heartwarming, one of the students was brought to tears. He was so proud of himself for presenting and creating something to be proud of. But what really brought him to tears, was the support and positive remarks he received from his classmates!! This is an incredibly great group of kids!
South Ridge Elementary School
Last February South Ridge completed our reauthorization. We were so pleased that we received a number of commendations from our evaluators. They complimented us on how involved our administration is in the IB curriculum and how collaborative we are. Again, we were not given any matters to be addressed and are authorized to continue to do awesome teaching and learning for the next five years.
We have really been focusing on the Learner Profiles this year. Each month was assigned a Learner Profile and teachers and classrooms are focusing on that profile.
In October we had a “Communicator Battle”. Our battlers included Simba, from the Lion King, Dora the Explorer, Buzz Lightyear, and Yoda. The fist week Simba and Dora battled with Simba coming out ahead. Week two involved a battle between Yoda and Buzz with Yoda as the winner. The final was Simba vs Yoda and Yoda won in a landslide. The students, and teachers, had a great time with this battle.
In November we are focusing on the Learner Profile of Inquirer. Students are given an inquiry question each week. These are thought provoking questions with no right or wrong answers. We then make a video to share some of those really great student responses. Teachers pose the questions and share the video as a part of their Morning Meeting activities.
South Ridge fifth graders had the opportunity to attend a short Outdoor Education experience at Stone Canyon the first week of November. They participated in archery, high ropes, team building and other fun learning activities. While they did not stay overnight, they were still able to enjoy several meals and the always popular campfire.
Our staff are continuing to be learners and are taking part in a number of book studies. We have one book study focused around the book, Concept Based Inquiry in Action. Members of this group are concentrating on ways to bring more concept based learning and inquiry into their teaching practice. Another group is working with Jennifer Gottschalk and creating enthusiastic writers. A third book study on the topic of academic conversations will be starting in the second semester.
October was Spread Kindness Month. Students and staff were encouraged to perform an act of kindness.
New school counselor, Tiffany Wade, recently organized two wonderful events for our students. We celebrated “Start with Hello” week from September 21st - 25th. The idea was bring students together in a positive manner. We also celebrated “Red Ribbon” week from October 26th - 30th with the focus on saying no to drugs. Both weeks included fun theme days and lessons.
