The Rock Cycle
By: Anabelle Sigman
I started out as magma deep in the ground I had been melted down from a rock into magma. I waited for thousands of years just waiting to see the world. Finally it was my time, I had exploded from the ground. I became extrusive igneous rock, and I cooled very quickly after rolling down the volcano side. I was ready to begin my adventure!
After about 1,000 years (which is nothing compared to sitting underground) it rains and hails here in Hawaii, which rarely ever happens. The weathering and erosion have broken me down. I roll down the hill and onto the sea shore. Here I was absorbed into the roots of a plant, I became part of the plant. I stayed here for about 1,000 years, being a plant was exciting and fun for me! Soon the plant died though, and I became part of the ocean floor. I became a sediment! Over about 10,000 years I was being compacted into the ground, by many layers of rock and sand. The layers kept piling up on my and pushing down into the ocean floor. I eventually became a sediment rock! I just sat here for around 10,000 years in a big rock made of many colorful layers. Suddenly I felt a BOOM CRASH!!! The tectonic plate I had been sitting on for all of these years had crashed into another plate, huge forces crushed me and I became a metamorphic rock! I was later exposed to a nearby source of molten lava, I was melted down. Soon the magma rushed out of a volcano and I was happy to see the world again. I again (just like last time) cooled very quickly, but this time the wind caused weathering and erosion. The wind separated me from the rest of the rock, and deposition cared me down a hill and onto the sea shore once again. Now I am a sediment (again) and we will see what happens next. Till then I'll just sit here on the shore.
