Relay for Life!

Fighting Ever Fighting

What is it?

The website says it best when it explains Relay for Life as a movement to raise awareness and funds to save lives from cancer. Places around the world hold events like the Relay for Life held at K-State to CELEBRATE, REMEMBER, and FIGHT BACK. We celebrate the survivors of cancer, remember those who have lost their lives to cancer, honor those who are still fighting, and fight back against the disease by supporting research to find a cure.

My Experience

My mom took my family and I to our county's summer Relay for Life event in Ellsworth for years as she fought her battle with cancer. I was always so excited to play the kid games that were held to raise money and remember walking with her during the Survivor Lap. After she passed, my brothers and I have tried to continue attending the event- every time walking/running laps for many hours as a reminder that cancer never sleeps and listening to the Luminaria Ceremony with candles lit around the track for those who were affected by cancer. This year I am excited to continue the tradition of participating, but a little differently this time, by forming a team with Emilie Taylor.

What You Do?

K-State's theme this year is 'Family Reunion' and will be on Friday, April 25th from 6:00p.m. -12:00 a.m. at Memorial Stadium. This will be my first year attending the K-State Relay for Life and the evening activities vary based on where they are held, but it will be filled with games, entertainment, food, fundraising, ceremonies, and lots of fun! The evening often starts off with a celebration- watching those who are winning or have won the fight with cancer walk the Survivor Lap. Later in the evening the Luminaria Ceremony takes place where the names from the luminaries are read. You can buy a luminary for anyone who is or has battled cancer. Throughout the evening people are walking or running around the track as it is encouraged to have at least one member from each team walking the whole time. Plus, team competitions are held during different parts of the night. The evening is a great time to celebrate life, to pray for those who have fought or are fighting with cancer, and to support each other as most people have been affected by cancer in some way.

How to Sign Up!

Anybody can join our Relay for Life Family (our team)...the more the merrier and WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU!

Sign up by going to The page should look like this picture.

When you get there...

1. Click on Sign Up

2. Click on 'Join a Team' on the right side of the page under New Participants.

3. Select 'Shane's Soldiers' as the team name.

4. Fill out the rest of the form and click confirm- it is $10 to join the event and it also asks for a fundraising goal. It's okay if you are unable to fundraise much. I usually just raise money by selling luminaries.
