APRIL FOCUS - RESILIENCE
All children are capable of working through challenges and coping with stress. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from stress, adversity, failure, and challenges. It’s not something that kids either have or don’t have; it’s a skill that kids develop as they grow.
Resilient kids are more likely to take healthy risks because they don’t fear falling short of expectations. They are curious, brave, and trusting of their instincts. They know their limits and they push themselves to step outside of their comfort zones. This helps them reach for their long-term goals and it helps them solve problems independently.
Here are a few ways to promote resilience:
- Kids develop coping skills within the context of caring relationships, so it’s important to spend one-on-one time with them.
- Embracing mistakes (your own included) helps promote a growth mindset and gives kids the message that mistakes help them learn. It can be helpful to talk about a mistake you made and how you recovered from it.
- When kids come to parents to solve their problems, the natural response is to lecture or explain. A better strategy is to ask questions. By bouncing the problem back to the child with questions, the parent helps the child think through the issue and come up with solutions.
- Deep breathing exercises help kids relax and calm themselves when they experience stress or frustration. This enables them to remain calm and process the situation clearly.
OLSON VARIETY SHOW ~ MAY 7, 2019
Tuesday, May 7th is the date for our 10th Annual Olson Variety Show!
As in the past, the show will include students who have "auditioned" and been selected for the show, and who have rehearsed their contribution during each of the practices. We look for a "variety" of acts that represent many expressions of creative performances.

SCHOOL SAFETY DRILLS
Throughout the month of April our students will take part in several of the required School Safety Drills. These are required by the State of Illinois to ensure that students know what to do in the event of an emergency.
Fire Drill - We work with the Woodstock Fire Department to evacuate the building to a safe location in the back field. The alarm sounds and all staff and students preceed out of the building until the signal is given to return.
Tornado Drill - Students and staff are notified of a severe weather emergency and the need to take shelter immediately. Classes are assigned to safe locations in the building. These include the hallways, the old locker room/storage area, and bathrooms in the inside of the building.
Bus Evacuation - All students practice evacuation procedures annually. These include information about how to safely exit the bus in an emergency situation.
Law Enforcement Drill - This is done at the beginning of each school year. We work with the Woodstock Police Dept to provide an opportunity to practice procedure that would be necessary in the event of unsafe situations in the building.
BAND NOTES FROM MRS. SCHWEIHS
Our SPRING CONCERTS are fast approaching. Check out the picture below for concert dates and details.
Our 2019 SUMMER BAND CAMP (open to current 5th, 6th, and 7th grade band members) is a great way to keep playing over the summer! It is one week July 8 through July 12, from 10:30-1:30 each day, and takes place at Emricson Park in Woodstock (with a Plan B location of Creekside MS for bad weather). We typically choose lighter, more popular song choices, and take time to enjoy the park setting. We finish the camp with a concert in the Woodstock Square on Friday the 12th at 7pm. Check out the PDF slideshow with camp pictures from the last 3 years, and sign up today! All of the kids received a camp information/registration form to bring home (check their folder), but it is also LINKED HERE.
MUSTANG BIG GIVE 2019
A few of the charities that will be supported this year are: St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Helping Paws, Red Cross, Make-A-Wish, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
A few of the items for raffle are an Amazon Alexa and Google glasses. Items for sale include stress balls, t-shirts, duct tape wallets, candy, rubber ducks, etc.
On Thursday, April 18 each class (and parents or families) are invited to "shop" in the gym. Students may bring small amounts of money that will be exchanged at the "market" with all money collected donated to a charity.
