December 2018

A Message From Principal Green

Parents, we’ve had a great first semester of the school year! After the last day of the semester (Friday, December 21, 2018), we will be half-way through the school year. Please sit down with your students and review the semester and discuss all their accomplishments and the areas where they need to improve and grow. Students will return to school on Monday, January 7th. Prior to your student’s return, please remind them of how critical the upcoming months will be for all of them. Be reminded that all students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will take the Georgia Milestones Assessment during the month of April. This assessment covers all the ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies content covered since the beginning of the school year.

Social Emotional Learning: Responsible Decision Making

Making constructive and safe choices

Every parent wants what’s best for their child. They want them to grow into mature independent, and self-confident individuals who can make healthy choices and decisions for themselves. Learning to make good decisions helps children become both self-reliant and responsible individuals. Learning to consider the situation and consider how a choice or decision can affect themselves or others is also an important part of children developing good decision-making skills.

Providing young children opportunities to use their voices, make decisions, develop ownership, and solve problems are great ways to bond with them too. Giving children a say also builds respect, invites cooperation, builds strong bonds within the family and gives them a feeling of being in control.

Parent below you will find some suggestions that you can use with your children.

The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) book for December continues to encourage children to make positive changes by learning how to make responsible choices and decisions.

Core Component: Responsible Decision Making

(making constructive and safe choices)

The Bad Seed by Jory John

Corn kernels, pistachios, peanuts, and other seeds gasp and point as a "baaaaaaaaaaad seed" goes by. When others mumble about him, he can hear them because he has "good hearing for a seed." The bad seed tells "long jokes with no punch lines," lies "about pointless stuff," and never puts things back where they belong. But he did not start out that way; it was only after a traumatic experience that he became "a different seed entirely." This is a story that opens up dialogue about our reactions to life experiences, the consequences of our choices, and the chance to make a change for the better. .— School Library Journal Review

Oskar and the Eight Blessing

by Tanya & Richard Simon

A refugee seeking sanctuary from the horrors of Kristallnacht, Oskar arrives by ship in New York City with only a photograph and an address for an aunt he has never met. It is both the seventh day of Hanukkah and Christmas Eve, 1938. As Oskar walks the length of Manhattan, from the Battery to his new home in the north of the city, he passes experiences the city's many holiday sights, and encounters it various residents. Each offers Oskar a small act of kindness, welcoming him to the city and helping him on his way to a new life in the new world. This is a heartwarming, timeless picture book.
