The goal of the Southwest Javelina Book Club is to encourage reading by providing a safe environment where literary discussion can take place in a casual but respectful manner.

Membership is open and free to all Southwest High School students. New members can join throughout the year by contacting scanning the QR-code located at the circulation desk. Members are expected to help during fundraising events and in community events in which the book club is involved. To remain an active member, a participant can miss no more than two meetings per semester. If you know you are going to be out in advance, please notify Mrs. Quiroz-Torres or Mrs. Rivas.

Go Book Hoggers!

I was happy to meet my wonderful book hoggers for the first time. The goal of the Southwest Javelina Book Club is to encourage reading by providing a safe environment where literary discussion can take place in a casual but respectful manner. We currently have 40 members in the book club.

TEAM WORK! During the first few weeks of school we worked hard to make sure all students had a laptop. Distributing to the class rooms or in the library were CIT Mr. Whitelaw, Lab Manager Mr. Estrada, Librarian Mrs. Quiroz-Torres and Library Clerk Mrs. Rivas. We were glad to help our students needing assistance the first few weeks with password changes, computer software updates and other technical issues.

Celebrate the freedom to read!

Strand 3: Reading – School library programs promote reading as an essential skill for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment which are essential skills for college, career, and community.

Dimension 3: Library materials reflect diversity, student choice for leisure reading, and reading for information as well as the needs of the curriculum and the state standards.

During Freshman Orientation students were given an overview of the library hours, procedures, resources and programs. Students were also shown how to access Mackinvia, create an account and view the many resources available.

The school library promotes selection of appropriate resources and tools for information use by: 1. Demonstrating and documenting how resources and technology are used to address information needs. 2. Providing opportunities for all members of the school community to develop information and technology skills needed to promote the transfer of information-related problem-solving strategies across all disciplines.

Strand 5: Safe and Nurturing Environment - School libraries are essential, safe, and flexible environments and are inviting centers for teaching and learning. Dimension 1: The school library program features a learning environment that cultivates a sense of community and respect among all students and staff.

Students in Ms. Pena's (CTE) business class created a Mackinvia backpack to utilize the resources for an assignment.
