Arrival and Dismissal
Morning Drop Off
There is no supervision before 8:20 a.m. Students cannot be dropped off in the front of the building prior to that time. Please know that for the safety of your child, you will be contacted and required to come in for a parent conference if you drop off prior to 8:20 a.m.
Dismissal
For the security and safety of your child, we are requiring one consistent dismissal plan. If you have an emergency and need to pick up your child, please send a note in that morning so there is no confusion at dismissal time. No dismissal changes will be able to occur after 2:50 each day.
Food Restrictions
Due to district policy, no outside food (cupcakes, cookies, etc.) can be served to students at school. If you would like to purchase a snack from the cafeteria for your child’s class, please fill out a “Parent Snack Order Form” at least a week in advance and return it to the cafeteria. This form is available on our website. Pencils, erasers, and other non-food goodies are also a great option for celebrations!
REMINDER: WE HAVE PEANUT-FREE CAFETERIAS!
Bad Weather? Get your Text Alert right away!
With winter coming, please prepare now for the possibility of emergency school closings. When the decision to close schools is made, the website is updated and radio stations get called first. As soon as Mrs. Howell gets word that school is closing or delayed, she immediately does a text alert for Wilbur families. Do not depend on the TV for reliable, up-to-date school closing information. There is a link to the school closing website at www.colonial.k12.de.us. The website also has a place for you to sign up for free e-mail notices. This is handy for your workplace in case of early dismissals. Radio stations the District calls are WILM-1450 AM, WJBR-99.5, WDEL-1150 AM, AND WSTW-93.7 FM.
VOLUNTEERS AND VISITORS
There is a district background check that will need to be completed by all regular volunteers and field trip chaperones. The cost is $19 and directions are on the district website under "Volunteer Form." The background check is good for 3 years.
Wilbur Elementary is fortunate to have numerous parent volunteers and visitors. Due to safety restrictions in public schools, infants, toddlers, and children not enrolled in our elementary school may not accompany a parent to the cafeteria, classroom, or school activities (such as field trips) during school hours.
Sign up TODAY for text alerts from Mrs. Howell.

GRANDPARENTS.....WE WANT YOU HERE ON NOVEMBER 9!
Grandparent Day is a tradition at Wilbur and will be occurring on November 9. We encourage grandparents to come out and get involved in the activities going on in the classrooms on that day from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. They may find they don’t want to leave! We love this opportunity to build bridges with family members. Our honored guests’ experiences will vary according to each class’s scheduled activities. Last year, we had over 500 grandparents here! We are hoping for even more this year. Just email your child’s teacher if a grandparent is planning to attend by 11/1. It will also be Time Warp Spirit Day so if they want to dress up for the event in the decade of their choosing, they are welcome to join in AND might even win a prize!
Attendance is CRITICAL to your child's success!
It is extremely important for students to be at school every day on time. With our hands-on curriculum, if a child is absent, it is very difficult for them to make up the learning that was missed. The truancy laws in our state require that we follow certain procedures if a student is absent unexcused. These include:
• At 3 – 9 unexcused absences, a letter will be sent home or a phone call will be made to discuss the issue with parents or guardians.
• At 10 unexcused absences, a home visit will be made by school personnel to discuss the absences and a letter will be sent home.
• At 15 unexcused absences, a certified letter will be sent home alerting parents or guardians about the seriousness of the situation.
• Above 15 unexcused absences could result in filing of truancy charges.
Please know that by law, we are only able to excuse the following absences:
• Illness of the student
• Medical diagnosis and treatment
• Death in the immediate family (1 day if in state; 3 days if outside the state)
• Contagious disease in the home (subject to regulations of the Department of Public Health)
• Legal business requiring the student’s presence
• Suspension from school (NOT including bus suspensions)
• Observance of religious holidays
Even if we receive a note letting us know that your child was on a family vacation, or out due to another non-excused absence, we are not able to excuse the absence. Thanks for making sure a note is sent in right away each time your child is absent due to illness! If you have any questions about absences or truancy, feel free to contact Mrs. Schreppler, Assistant Principal and our Truancy Coordinator.
Is there a difference between bullying and being mean?
At Wilbur, all students have the right to a safe, positive school environment. Many times, we can deal with ‘meanness’ or name calling in a quick, effective way and teach students the expected behaviors. Bullying is a bit different though. Bullying is defined as repeated attempts to ridicule, harass, humiliate, intimidate or inflict bodily harm. It is not a back and forth between two students, but is instead one-sided. We don’t take bullying lightly. If your child has reported this type of behavior happening to them, we want to know about it. Contact your child’s assistant principal to get the “Bullying Report” form. We will investigate and deal with these situations right away.
