It's all about OUR KIDS!
- Who needs our support at home, in school, and in the community? ... Our Kids!
- Who needs our guidance, attention, and patience today and everyday? ... Our Kids!
- Who will shape the future of our world tomorrow and in the years to come? ... Our Kids!
WIS Families,
As we wind down this school year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish our 6th grade students a fond farewell and success as they move on to academic and exrta-curricular opportunities at CMS. I would also like to acknowledge faculty and staff who will be leaving WIS at the end of the school year. I wish all of you best of luck and thank you for the lasting impact you’ve had on all of us at WIS.
With that, to all of my students and their families, please have a safe, restful and rewarding summer. Hopefully, we will all get the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends and come back to school on Wednesday, August 16th, with a sense of rejuvenation and excitement for the new school year.
Go Trojans!
Respectfully,
Mr. Longacre
Notes from Nurse Sosby
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As the year is quickly coming to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for entrusting your child’s health care to me and your continued support of keeping me updated on all their health concerns. There are a few things I need to address before the end of the year:
Medication pick up:
All medications that have been brought to school for your student must be picked up by Thursday, May 25, 2023 before 3:30 pm. After this time I will be disposing of all medications.
Due to construction and moving the nurse’s office, I will not be able to hold on to any medications past this time. Please plan accordingly to pick medication within the designated time frame.
Immunizations for 6th grade:
In the beginning of February, I sent home letters with all 5th grade students that informed you of the immunization requirements for 6th grade. Along with this letter, I attached a copy of your student’s most up to date immunization and specifically indicated what immunizations your student needs to receive. Please make your appointment and update your child’s immunization over summer break, rather than waiting till the start of school. It will be much easier on you and your student if they are completed early,
Immunizations are to be completed and due by the first day of school, which is Wednesday, August 16, 2023, and submitted to the nurse. The State of Indiana allows children to be in school 20 days from the first day of school without updated immunization, after which they will be excluded from school until immunizations are received. Exclusion Day is Thursday, September 14, 2023. For your student to remain in school, I will need an appointment card with date, time and location your student will be receiving their immunizations.
The only exception is if your student is not 11 years of age, at the start of school. Children must be 11 years old to receive the required immunizations. But are required to provide an appointment card with date , time and location where they will be receiving them.
Incoming 5th grade students who are 11 years of age must also receive Tdap and MCV4 before the start of school.
After your student receives their immunizations you may email them to me at
tsosby@duneland.K12.in.us or bring the record on the first day of school.
Registration 2023-2024:
The Health Service Forms will now be mandatory to fill out and not allow you to progress any further with the registration process. Please answer all the health forms completely and thoroughly. School nurses use this information to provide the best care to your students. It is very important to have the most up to date information to provide care.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! To celebrate a great year of success and learning all students will be going over to the Boys & Girls Club. Please email Mr. Longacre (slongacre@duneland.k12.in.us) if you would NOT like your student to participate.
Welcome Future WIS Students
Bailly, Brummitt, and Yost 4th graders visited WIS last week, to get a first-look at their future school. The students were welcomed with a performance by the WIS choir and taken on a tour by 6th grade volunteers. Mr. Longacre finished the visitation with some Westchester Q & A in a Jeopardy format. WIS appreciated the excitement shown by the future 5th graders and looks forward to their return in the fall.

5th Grade Curriculum
Language Arts
Last week in ELA we finished the novel Holes and got to watch the movie which is always a favorite for the students. We all (Mrs. Darnell, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Karagiannakis, Mr. Burke, and Mrs. Nashkoff) would like to encourage you and your families to visit the library this summer. Get books, find audiobooks online or through apps, encourage your kids to read and find something that they love! Kids really got into our books this year, many of which have sequels or other books by the same author. This is a great starting point to help kids find the books that really interest them.
Our books for the year were:
Swindle, by Gordon Korman (who has written many books of the same funny, quick paced style)
Holes, by Louis Sachar (has written over 20 books including the classic: Sideways Stories from Wayside School)
City of Ember, by Jeanne Duprau (has 4 sequels to this novel)
Hoot, by Carl Hiassen (has a whole series of similar books)
Hello Universe, by Erin Entrada Kelly (middle grades books with themes of friendship)
Math:
- The students took their NWEA end of year math test. Overall, the growth shown was outstanding! Many classes averaged over 20 points of growth from the beginning of the school year to the end! The students spent the rest of the week planning a road trip to 5 different cities in the United States. The students chose an attraction in each location, and factored the cost of gas needed to make their trip.
- This week the students will be participating in One School One Book, and sharing their road trips! They will also participate in some fun, end of the year activities at the end of the week.
Social Studies
- Last week we read about the events that lead to the Civil War. Students do not need to bring social studies textbooks to school this week. Students were asked to take their books home. Thank you for sharing your child with us this school year. We hope all students enjoyed their learning journey this year.
Science
- Last week was all about Battle Bots! Students designed and built a bot that fit over a Sphero. Once finished, all bots were fitted with a balloon. The students entered the arena with the goal to pop their competitors’ balloons, while avoiding having their own balloon popped. Everyone had a great time!!
