@your School Library
April 2017
April is National Poetry Month!
April is also School Library Month!!!!
Shhhh.........quiet, you are in the library! Not! Libraries today are very different! That is because 21st Century school libraries are not your mama's libraries anymore. The school libraries of today are expected to be transformative and innovative to promote the success of our students and help prepare them for their future! It is an expectation for all librarians in Lewisville ISD and across the nation. We, as educators, are preparing our students to be equipped with the necessary skills which will be valued in "Google" type workplaces such as collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, character, and cosmopolitanism (connecting globally). So, literacy and the love of reading is at the core of what the school library provides, but that is just the beginning of our students journey and relationship with their school libraries. If you can spare a minute, watch this video on “Have you Visited your Library Lately?”.

Little Free Libraries....
Undoubtedly, some of you have heard of Little Free Libraries. But, for those of you who have not, let me explain. Little Free Libraries are tiny little structures that are popping up in neighborhoods everywhere to offer free books to anyone wanting to read. According to Wikipedia, there are more than 50,000 Little Free Libraries registered to the non-profit LFL organization worldwide, in all 50 states, and 70 countries. And one of our very own, Amanda Stockton, who happens to be a neighborhood humanitarian and champion of our community set up a Little Free Library in her own front yard! She is my first ever featured guest because I just had to interview her about her inspiration behind deciding to set up a Little Free Library! Please read the interview below:
Fisanick: Why did you decide to set up a Little Free Library in your front yard?
Stockton: I had first heard about the LFL movement when TC placed one by the park by my parents’ house in Ridgepointe. James and I love to read, so we would stop by every time we visited my parents. When I turned 30, I knew that I wanted to do something big to commemorate so I asked my husband for a library!
Fisanick: What has been the response in your neighborhood?
Stockton: The best response has been to see all of the little future readers coming by in their strollers and on their bikes stopping to get new books!
Fisanick: Any advice / tips for someone who is thinking about setting up a LFL in their front yard?
Stockton: Even if you are not into reading, it’s a really fun way to bring some community to your neighborhood. Check out the LFL website and check out Pinterest for really fun ideas!
