March 3, 2017
Dear Bulldog families,
February and March are months devoted to the celebration of diversity and the impact of risk-taking individuals on society; Black History Month, Women’s History Month. and Disability Awareness Month. I was reminded of the power of people when I recently watched the movie Hidden Figures. This movie is “The story of a team of African American women mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the US space program.” There are so many books, movies, and experiences we can expose our children to in order to broaden their perspectives regarding the shaping of our history
In celebration of Disability Awareness Month, The City of Fishers is hosting many events. On Friday, March 17th, there will be a Fishers Athletic Showcase: Adapt and Thrive presentation. USA Paralympic Soccer Team, players Bryce Boarman & Seth Jahn as Keynote Speakers in the Fishers High School gymnasium from 6:00-8:00 p.m. For more information regarding other Disability Awareness events, please access this link:
As always thank you for partnering with us in education.

***********Testing Info to Know**********
IREAD Testing 3rd Grade
Third grade students will be taking their IREAD practice test on Wednesday, March 8th and the operational test will be given on March 13-15. The purpose of this state test is to measure foundational reading skills of 3rd grade students to ensure that all students can read proficiently before moving on to fourth grade.
Attention 3rd & 4th grade Parents
The Indiana Department of Education has determined the timing of the ISTEP applied skills testing. ISTEP+ Applied Skills testing will be from February 22nd through March 10th.
NBE will be practice testing the week of February 22nd with actual testing starting on February 27th. Most testing will be complete by March 8th with make-up’s being completed the rest of the week. Testing will occur in the morning hours.
ISTEP/CCRA (College &Career Ready Assessment) which is much like the ISTEP+ Multiple Choice testing done online will be the week of April 17th through April 28th.
Testing make-up days will be done as needed throughout the second week. As the time gets closer, teachers will send out detailed dates and information to parents.
The Indiana Department of Education has provided parents with some information concerning the testing at the link below: http://www.doe.in.gov/assessment/istep-grades-3-8
Attendance during these days is very important; please make every attempt to reschedule dentist/doctor appointments around the test dates.
Here are just a few tips for a good start to every morning and they also make for an even better testing situation:
• Get a good night’s sleep. This is important every night!!!
• A good morning at home makes for a good morning at school.
• Eat a good healthy breakfast.
• Wear comfortable clothes.
• Talk to your students about the test in advance not just the week of the test. Remind them to give their best effort today and everyday. This test is important, but too much stress can be a problem also.
• Encourage your student to listen to the teacher for directions.
• Encourage your student to think positively – they can do this!!!
• Smile ☺ and tell a funny joke – laughing is good for everyone.
Congratulations M.A.T.H. Bowl Team!
Our Bulldog M.A.T.H. Bowl team competed on 2/23 in the Purdue University Indiana Academic M.A.T.H. Bowl competition. This group of students used critical thinking and problem solving skills while competing against 14 other elementary schools in the area. After a performance that made us #BulldogProud, this group tied for 4th place! Thank you to all of the team members who worked so hard and a big thank you to Mrs. Buening and Mrs. Aschenbach for their time guiding and encouraging this great group of thinkers! Well done Bulldogs!
March Disability Awareness
In the City of Fishers and across the country, March has been designated as National Disability Awareness Month. The Fishers ADA/Disability Roundtable and the City of Fishers values its citizens with physical and intellectual disabilities. We have worked together to organize a month-long campaign to bring awareness about disabilities and to educate the community about inclusion. The City of Fishers has partnered with many outstanding groups and citizens, including HSE Schools to ensure March is filled with events that support disability awareness in our community.
This year’s 2017 March Disability Awareness Month theme emphasizes that people with disabilities are people first. They are co-workers, classmates, and neighbors, who want to be included in their communities – just like everyone else.
