Weiss Update 11/13/2022
November 13th, 2022
Happy Sunday Wildcat Families,
The holiday season is quickly approaching. While the holidays are a beautiful, magical, and wonderful time; they can also be a hard and stressful time for some. Weiss has had several local agencies reach out to ask if any families are in need of holiday support. This can be a very difficult and private struggle. If your family is in need of some holiday help, please reach out to the staff member you feel most comfortable sharing this with, it could be your child's teacher, Mr. Bezeau, or Mrs. Hunter. We will share this information with our "Secret Santa's," throughout the community.
We are excited to spend November and December with this amazing community.
Gratitude
This month at Weiss, we continue to learn about gratitude. Please continue to talk to your child about gratitude. Here is a gratitude video I found that shares some great ways to practice being grateful every day. Some of these could be a great activity for your family to practice together.
Since November is here it's the perfect time to show gratitude, please take a moment to complete this Google Form to share a shout-out about a Weiss staff member. A single sentence or two can really make a great impact. https://forms.gle/Rx4AvhThzRxZHc3r6
Veteran's Day
Thank you to all our families who sent in a My Hero sheet with your child for Veteran's Day. It was very touching to see all the Veteran's within our own Weiss community. Also, thank you to Mrs. Cain for creating commemorative flag with our students to honor our Veterans. Students were able to write a message or make a picture on part of the flag showing our gratitude to our Veterans. THANK you to all who served!
November 23rd- Turkey Trot
Please see the attached flyer with information about our Weiss Turkey Trot on November 23rd. Please let Mr. Martin know if you will be able to help this event by volunteering. You can do that by completing the volunteer portion of the flyer and sending it back to school with your child. All Volunteers must have a volunteer background form completed in order to be considered for volunteering.
Picture Retake- November 16th
We just wanted to send a reminder that November 16th is Picture Retakes. Only children of our families that are interested in retakes will get their picture taken on this day. Please make sure to notify your child's teacher if you would like them to get their picture taken.
Weiss Watch D.O.G.S. Program
We love having our father-figures helping at Weiss. This is a great chance to see the great things happening at Weiss and support student's in their learning. If you are interested in being a WatchDOG you MUST have completed a background check that has been approved. If you have not done this yet, you can print one out here and send it to school with your Wildcat student https://www.gibdist.net/uploaded/Weiss_Elementary/2017_Web/19-20/VOLUNTEER_RELEASE_FORM_(2).pdf
If you have a completed background check, you can sign-up to be a WatchDOG at this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c094aaca82da6f94-watch
If you have any questions about WatchDOGS, please don't hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Moreno at morenoj@gibdist.net or call our office at 734-379-7060.
Winter Weather
It looks like the 70 degree days are behind us here for a little while in Michigan. It is important for each student to have the necessary outdoor gear to travel to and from school safely and to enjoy opportunities to get outside for recess. As the weather gets colder and wet, it is recommended that students have the following items: winter hat, mittens/gloves, and a warm/winter jacket(other winter gear may be requested by specific teachers). Despite the cold weather, many classes still go outside for recess, unless there has been a weather advisory stating that we cannot go outside.
In order to help us, please remember to LABEL EVERYTHING, in case any items get lost so we can easily get them back to your child. Lower elementary students can practice at home by having your child dress him/herself in winter gear and by practicing zipping up jackets at home.
There are resources available for those who may find it a hardship to secure the necessary winter gear. Please contact our office for assistance.
Pictures of School Happenings
Last week our peer to peer students worked together to create placemats that will be given to Senior Alliance for their Thanksgiving dinner.
Earlier this month we had an assembly for our October PBIS awards. We highlighted our students that went above and beyond with being respectful, kind, and positive.
For the month of November, as a school, we are focusing on gratitude
Our 4th grade Orange Squad has kicked off their kindness initiative by designing posters that remind our Weiss students of proper and kind recess, library and cafeteria etiquette. They got together to make posters for the school playground, reminding students to make sure that they are putting their lunch/snack garbage in the trash bin, and to have good sportsmanship. The cafeteria, to remind students of their manners and to make sure they are cleaning up after themselves, and the library, reminding students to use a voice level one, and to not leave the library before tidying up. The Orange Squad will also be sharing kindness challenges, and promoting positivity around the school everyday! Great work Orange Squad
