Elementary Summer School Update Information 2016

District Summer School is intended to provide remediation for students at risk of retention. The goal in summer school is to utilize the information provided by the home campus teachers through the “skills checklist” to provided targeted intervention in each student’s areas of need. At the conclusion of summer school, home campuses will receive a report on each student’s growth in the identified areas to support promotion/retention decisions.

Program Overview

· The program for PK and Kinder students (June 28 – August 2) as well as the program for 1st – 4th grade students (July 11 – August 2) will run very similarly to the program from last summer.

· The Special Language Program is for our current Pre K and Kinder LEP students.

· The 1st – 4th Grade Program will be for current 1st – 4th grade students who do not pass Math and/or Language Arts Composite for the year.

· Schools will identify students who are failing language arts composite and/or math on their report card for the year. (We realize you don’t have 4th nine weeks report grades yet. You will simply need to use your best judgment.)

Registration Information

· There will be a nonrefundable $50 fee for this program.

· We have been asked to send home the qualification letter, the enrollment form, and the fee payment form to identified 1st – 4th graders and the enrollment and qualification letter for LEP students in PK and Kinder.

· Once the forms are returned, The ADAs will check the fee payment website to see if parents have submitted payment. When payment is received, the ADA will enroll students in Skyward. Students should not be enrolled without full payment unless he/she is one of the campuses scholarship recipients (see paragraph below for more information).

· All enrollment should be completed in Skyward by May 6. Transportation will receive all enrollment information by May 13th and will provide bus numbers by May 31st. The enrollment letter will then need to be sent home, which includes the bus number. Also include the pink card (cherry cardstock) for PK/K students.

· Site coordinators will be contacting each campus to find out how many 1st-4th grade students were invited to summer school in order to hire the appropriate number of teachers.

· Final skills checklists will be sent out to campuses in early May.

Scholarships

· Each campus has up to 10 scholarships. Schools will decide which students will receive a summer school scholarship.
