Westside Students Learn Every Moment of Every Day
Mrs. McKinney, our Physical Education teacher, uses different modes of learning to grow the whole child! First, her Walk to Success group uses BrainBall materials to teach CVC words. Next, her Kindergarten class participated in Backyard Yoga during the nutrition class with Mrs. Shelby from the University of Florida Nutrition program. Last, she helped the Brevard After Care students work on our circular flower garden.
Ms. O'Neill's Kindergarten class learned about elephants and made elephant headbands for the letter E. Did you know that elephants are the largest land mammal and take dust baths to cool down their bodies? Learning about elephants was EXCELLENT! Then, they made Friendship necklaces for Fun Friday activity for letter F.
Students in Mrs. Burchinal’s 5th grade class participated in critical-thinking activities. They had to devise a way to save Sam (gummy worm) who is on a capsized boat (cup) by putting a life- preserver (gummy saver) around him. Unfortunately, they could NOT touch Sam, the boat, or the life-preserver in the process! The online students watched and offered ideas on how to save Sam.
“How would you solve it?” First Graders in Ms. Dickson's class demonstrated different ways to solve the same type of problem. These students used their strategies and creativity to show what they know!
Sixth Grade students in Ms. Dawkin's class reviewed math by playing the game of Clue to figure out “who kidnapped the teacher?” All clues were given by correctly solving math equations. In ELA, students reviewed reading comprehension by working in groups and playing 4 corners. Groups went to the corner they believe went with their correct answer.
