My Culture Is NOT A Costume | Teen Vogue

Cultural Appropriation vs. Cultural Appreciation

As Halloween approaches, it is a great time to review cultural appropriation vs. cultural appreciation. Cultural Appropriation is simply taking one aspect of a culture that is not your own and using it for your own personal interest. Cultural Appreciation is when someone seeks to understand and learn about another culture in an effort to broaden their perspective and connect with others cross-culturally. Halloween costumes, such as Native American costumes, fall under cultural appropriation when they are worn by those outside of that culture. Here is an article that you might want to read. Learn more about cultural appropriation and children’s costumes in this video and resource. Here is another great video by teens to illustrate this concept.
