Hang on! The Franklin County 4-H Calendar is coming very soon! In the meantime, here are some very important dates and news items to note...

Advisor Appreciation & Enrichment Night

Monday, Jan. 25th, 6pm

Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive, Columbus, OH 43210

All advisors should attend including: seasoned advisors (those with more than 5, 10, 20, even 30 years or more), advisors who’ve served several years, and all of those individuals “in the process” or planning to become advisors in 2016.

The evening will include:

  • Dinner served at 6:00pm.
  • REQUIRED Training for 2016 (New State Requirements!)
  • Need to Know Club Management Info
  • A Splash of Fun
  • Enrollment Packets for 2016
  • Some inspiration for the coming year

All Advisors who register and attend will receive several useful token of appreciation for your service as an advisor along with enjoying a tasty buffet dinner and a time of fellowship following the planned activities. RSVP now if you haven't already!

Cabin Fever Fun Day

Saturday, Jan. 30th, 9:30am-12pm

3200 Indian Village Road Columbus, OH

Join in the activities at the McKnight Outdoor Education Center on Saturday, January 30.
  • Try out some interactive 4-H project activities.
  • Cost: $10 for materials
  • Open to everyone, Kindergarten through 5th grade (suggested ages)
  • Adults must attend with youth. One adult may supervise up to six children.

Ohio 4-H Conference - Register by Feb. 8

Saturday, March 12th, 8:30am-4pm

Columbus Convention Center

The Ohio 4-H Conference is a dynamic conference for 4-H members and advisors. Literally hundreds of sessions are geared toward enhancing 4-H programs in clubs, enhancing leadership skills, and so much more.

Registration forms and payments are due to the Franklin County Extension Office by February 8. Full or partial reimbursement may be available but at the time of printing this form it was unknown how much funding is available from the 4-H Council for Franklin County members and advisors for scholarships. If funding is available, either your check will be returned to you or a reimbursement will be made.

New 4-H Advisor (Volunteer) Orientation

Adults who would like to become 4-H Volunteer Club Advisors must complete a six step process. 1)application 2)sign a standards of behavior 3)reference checks 4)fingerprint background check 5)attend orientation 6)interview with county educator

Winter Project Fair

Ohio 4-H Achievement Records Due January 19

Each year, the Franklin County 4-H Council raises money to support our local 4-H program. Part of the money they raise goes to providing 4-H teens with amazing opportunities to take part in a trips and camps throughout Ohio and nationally. Citizenship Washington Focus: July 3 – July 9, 2016

4-H leadership program for high school youth, ages 15-19, from across the country. The program uses our nation’s capital as a classroom to foster youth appreciation, understanding and involvement in civic responsibility, government operations and current issues.


Leadership Washington Focus: June 13-17, 2016 (Entering grades 7-9 in Aug. 2016)

LWF is a 4-H leadership program for middle school youth. The program will take place at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center, just 1 mile from the Washington, D.C. border. Participants build confidence in their ability to motivate and direct others in meaningful action; practice effective communication with others through group discussion and public speaking; work with others to create and accomplish goals; develop an understanding of their own personal leadership style, exchange ideas, practice respect, and form friendships with other 4-H'ers from across the nation; and experience hands-on learning using the historical backdrop of Washington, D.C.


Ohio 4-H Leadership Camp: July 5-9, 2016 (Ages 15 and older)

The State 4-H Leadership Camp is a once-in-a-lifetime, exciting, fun, challenging, in-depth, learn-by-doing leadership development experience. It is one of the best programs of its kind in the nation. Leadership Campers plan, conduct, and evaluate the program themselves!


Ohio 4-H Sea Camp: July 9-13, 2016 (Ages 13 and older)

Experience marine biology first-hand at Kelley’s Island 4-H Camp on Lake Erie. Fishing ecology, marine navigation, snorkeling, sailing and much more.


Ohio Forestry & Wildlife Conservation Camp: June 12-17, 2016 (Ages 15 and older)

(Ages 15 and older)

Ever wonder what types of trees are in Ohio’s forests? Or what kinds of relationships organisms have with the forest? This camp is for the nature lover and is held at Camp Muskingum in eastern Ohio.


Shooting Sports Camp: July 1-3, 2016 (Ages 9-12) / July 17-22, 2016 (Ages12-18)

This camp will foster life skills in 4-H youth through the shooting sports curriculum and activities that will enable boys and girls to reach their fullest potential as capable, caring and contributing citizens. This camp is held at Canter's Cave 4-H Camp in southern Ohio.


Buckeye Leadership Workshop: March 30-April 3, 2016 (Ages 15 and older)

Designed as a balanced program of social, physical, mental, and spiritual activities. Participants are encouraged and empowered to experiment with new activities, develop new abilities, expand their creativity, practice and master new leadership skills, share ideas and personal skills, establish new friendships, and develop networks of human resources.


  • To apply for a Franklin County 4-H Trip Scholarship, complete the Ohio 4-H Achievement Record Application and submit it to the Franklin County Extension Office no later than January 19, 2016.

STATE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

These 25 awards recognize a 4-H member's achievement in a specific area. Areas include: Beef, CARTEENS, Citizenship & Community Service, Clothing & Textiles, Companion Animals, Dairy, Dairy Goat, Environmental Sciences, Family Life & Child Development, Foods & Nutrition, Gardening & Horticulture, Health & Safety, Horse, Leadership, Meat Goat, Mechanical & Engineering Sciences, Personal Development, Photography, Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep, Shooting Sports, Swine, Woodworking and Veterinary Science. Each achievement award winner will receive a trip to the National 4-H Congress and is scheduled to be held in Atlanta, Georgia in late November, 2016.


  • To apply to be selected as the county nominee for a State Achievement Award and compete for the statewide award, complete the Ohio 4-H Achievement Record Application and submit it to the Franklin County Extension Office no later than January 19, 2016.

OTHER STATE AWARDS

State Junior Fair Board: SJFB is comprised of representatives from several different youth organizations in Ohio including 4-H Youth Development. State Junior Fair Board members help strengthen and coordinate State Fair activities in a fast-paced, action-packed month at the Ohio State Fair. Junior Fair Board members are expected to attend meetings and stay at the fair for the entire 12 days.

OTA Local Government Award: Two $1,500 awards are available to any 4-H high school senior who has completed a local government-type activity that has had significant impact on the applicant's community, township or county.


  • To apply for this opportunity, members need to complete a State 4-H Achievement Record and submit it to the Franklin County Extension Office no later than January 19, 2016.

OHIO 4-H SCHOLARSHIPS

There are 24 state 4-H scholarships available and each has its own description and its own list of eligibility requirements. Completion of an Ohio 4-H Achievement Record is not necessary to be eligible for this award/opportunity. Instead, a separate, specialized application online form is required.

Ohio 4-H Ambassador Applications

Ohio 4-H Ambassadors are the youth spokespersons for Ohio 4-H. Each year outstanding 4-H teens who demonstrate excellence in 4-H achievement, citizenship, and leadership earn invitations to become Ohio 4-H Ambassadors.


Being a 4-H Ambassador is both an honor and a responsibility. Ambassadors serve as speakers, emcees, program facilitators, hosts or hostesses, committee members, and in many other youth leadership roles for 4-H and Extension programs and events throughout the state. Ohio 4-H Ambassadors are also tremendous role models who maintain the highest standards of excellence as they fulfill their 4-H pledge commitments of clear thinking, great loyalty, large service, and better living to make the best better in their clubs, communities, country, and world.
