On November 13th, Dr. Bourff emailed the communication below related to November 19th. There are a few other items specific to FCI that I wanted to share:
- Art Club – No Art Club on 11/19. There will be art club on 12/10 and 12/17 to conclude Art Club this semester.
- Choir – No Choir on 11/19. There is an optional make-up rehearsal on Monday, 11/18 from after school until 3:30pm. Their concert is still on 11/20 @ 6:30pm.
If you have concerns about the January 6th school day, please feel free to contact me @ email@example.com
Communication from Dr. Bourff re: 11/19
Dear HSE Parents, Guardians and Staff,
As you may have read or heard on the news, there is a rally taking place at the statehouse on Tuesday, November 19 called Red For Ed. This event is being organized by the Indiana State Teachers Association to bring attention to concerns they believe diminish their profession and compromise public education.
Due to the large number of teacher absences expected next Tuesday, I announced the cancellation of school for students on November 19 during Wednesday night’s board meeting. That day will be converted to a teacher work day, much like we have built into our calendar at the beginning, middle and end of the year. We regret the disruption this may cause for you and your family, but with reduced staffing, we are unable to ensure students will receive a quality day of learning in a safe environment.
This decision was not made lightly. We examined as many options as possible that would both support our teachers who want to exercise their rights to advocate for public education, while maintaining our commitment to educate your children.
Further, I announced that I would be recommending that students return from Winter Break on Monday, January 6, 2020 to make up for this lost day of instruction.
Hamilton Southeastern Schools has been fortunate in that we have been able to offer competitive salaries to our teachers, but we also understand the burdens that are placed on educators and share a number of those concerns, such as:
- the evaluations of schools and teachers are based on a flawed student assessment program,
- funding for K-12 schools has been syphoned away in support of vouchers and charters,
- and licensing requirements for teachers continue to be added without provisions for funding or time.
We encourage anyone who believes in Indiana public schools to make your voice heard through emails, phone calls, letters and meetings with your state legislators.
Thank you for understanding and support of our students, staff and schools.
Dr. Allen Bourff

Falcon Frenzy Basketball Game - HELP IS STILL NEEDED WITH CONCESSIONS!
On Thursday November 21st, FCI is hosting its' first home Boys' Basketball game against SCI, starting at 3:15pm. All students are invited, and encouraged, to stay after school to attend the game. It costs $1 for students to attend the game. This game is affectionately known as the "Falcon Frenzy" game. We are in need of several volunteers to help sell concessions during the game. We will have three concession stands open during the game - two in the gym plus the main stand near the cafeteria for our visitors. Our students must remain in the gym during the game. We are asking for volunteers from 2:30-5:30pm to set-up, sell concessions, and clean up. If you are able to help out at the Falcon Frenzy game, please sign up here:
Please contact Charron Wright at firstname.lastname@example.org or 317-508-5244 with any questions.
December Treat for the FCI Staff
We are planning a fun, Pintrest-inspired treat for the FCI Staff in December. We are in need of large quantities of candy for our treat. If you are willing to donate the candy requested, please sign up here: https://signup.com/go/qUwdZcp. We are asking that all donations be dropped off anytime before or on Friday December 6th. Donations can be sent to school with your student or dropped off in the main office. Thank you!
Spirit wear orders forms are now available! Order forms are included in the Falcon Flyer, have been posted to the school's Twitter and Facebook pages, and there are hard copies available in the office if your student needs to pick one up. Order forms and payment are due by Tuesday November 26th. Our plan is to have spirit wear orders back and delivered to students before Winter Break. Keep in mind that Fall Creek Junior High's mascot is also a falcon (and when the mascot update is complete the falcons at both schools will be the same) so spirit wear should have some lasting power. Please contact Amy Cox at email@example.com with any questions about spirit wear.

6th Grade Girls Basketball Try-outs
Wednesday, November 13th was World Kindness Day! Several student groups, including Friendly Falcons and Student Council, recognized this day by intentionally helping others around our school with their kind acts. Classes talked about the importance of kindness, respect, inclusiveness, and integrity in our daily interactions with others.
At FCI all of our students participate in Social Emotional Learning (SEL). These lessons occur once a week and are taught by your child's classroom teacher. Lessons cover a variety of skills including empathy, emotional regulation, and mindfulness. Below are the topics that were recently covered in our lessons. Please see the Skylert for Home Links.
