September 11, 2001 terrorist attack
ow ,The terrorist attacks by the group Al-Qaeda happened on the morning of September 11, 2001. There were four planes hijacked headed for four different landmarks in the U.S.A. Two of the planes crashed into the North and South twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The third plane crashed into the Pentagon in Virginia, and the last one was headed in the direction of Washington D.C. but the passengers overcame the terrorists and it ended up crashing in a field in Pennsylvania. There was about 3,000 total deaths, including 19 terrorists, and about $3 trillion in total costs. Many Americans lost family members and loved ones. This was a sad day and will never be forgotten.
Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast of the United states on the morning of August 29, 2005. It was the 11th named storm and was one of the top 5 deadliest hurricanes ever in the United States. It was over 400 miles wide and killed around 1,300 people. The total damage it caused was about $108 billion. The hurricane lasted 8 days and reached wind speeds up to 175 MPH.
Pluto Reclassified as a Dwarf
On September 13, 2006 Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet. The difference between a dwarf planet and a regular one is that dwarf planets aren't gravitationally dominant. That means that there is other things of similar size that share its orbital space. Pluto is about 3.7 billion miles away from the sun which is why it has a normal temperature of around -356 degrees fahrenheit. The surface of Pluto is made of frozen nitrogen and methane.
Bp Oil Spill
Oil began gushing out in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010 and it was 87 days before they capped it on July 15, 2010. About 210 million gallons of oil was spilled int the Gulf. 11 people died and many animals such as birds and turtles were covered in oil from head toe. Throughout 2013 oil clean up crews worked four days a week to help clean the beaches and the animals and the water. Many dolphins and other marine life were dying because of the oil levels in the water.

Osama Bin Laden killed
Osama Bin Laden was the leader of the terrorist group Al-Qaeda, which was one of the biggest in the world. Al-Qaeda is the group that flew the planes into the twin towers in New York City on September 11, 2001. He was killed on May 2, 2011 by the U.S special forces when they raided his compound in Pakistan. During the raid, 5 people were killed by the U.S and no American got hurt. After they killed Bin Laden they flew him to Afghanistan for official identification and then buried him in the Arabian Sea for religious purposes.
2008 Presidential Election
The presidential election of 2008 made history. On November 4, 2008 the Illinois senator Barack Obama became the first African-American to be elected president and the first sitting senator elected since JFK. Also this was the first time two sitting senators ran against each other. It was also the first time the Republican party nominated a woman for vice president. That woman was Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska.
War On Terror
The War on Terror happened because of the 9/11 attacks. America wanted to take down terrorist groups, specifically Al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, so they invaded Afghanistan and Iraq. Saddam Hussein was captured and beheaded and Osama Bin Laden was killed 10 years later by U.S special forces. To this day, America still has troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Hurricane Ike
Hurricane Ike formed on September 1, 2008 and lasted 14 days. It was destructive in haiti and also in Galveston, Texas. In total there was around 200 deaths most of which were in the United States. It caused $37.5 billion in damage and reached wind speeds up to around 150 MPH. Many homes in Galveston were destroyed and flooded and there had to be a lot of rebuilding.
