DIVERSITY UNITES US!
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL WETTSTEIN
Dr. Wettstein has been the assistant principal at Norman Binkley since 2016. She grew up in New Jersey. Dr. Wettstein enjoys working alongside our amazing Norman Binkley families.
We are committed to providing all students with a challenging curriculum that develops their academic, social, and emotional life skills. This is essential in today's competitive environment. Students set personalized goals for academic achievement and pinpoint the extra day to day things they can do to be successful. They go "Above and Beyond"!
The Norman Binkley family believes in integrating academics with hands-on, experiential and fun experiences. Grade levels do both in-person (Nashville Ballet, Tooth Fairy) and off campus field trips (Nashville Zoo, Pumpkin Patch, Children's Theatre, Adventure Science Center, Discovery Center in Murfreesboro, Cheekwood, and TPAC Performances to name a few).
Have you seen that our students slime the principals when they read so many books and meet their goals? Have you watched the videos of our teachers dancing in costumes? We're serious about learning. We're also serious about fun, rewarding positive behavior and academic achievements, and our mascot Bink. He's pretty cool. Sometimes he'll make appearances at Pep Rallies or the Fall Festival or when we're on Channel 5 showing off our amazing students and their drive to read.
The staff at Norman Binkley believes in teaching the whole child. It is our goal to provide every child with experiences that have been designed to meet the needs of all learners within a safe and nurturing environment.
Diversity is our strength! We have students from all over the world learning together in one building. We celebrate our differences throughout the school day and also one of our favorite annual family events, Multicultural Dinner and Art Show. There are over 20 languages spoken here. It is truly amazing to see all of the different students bringing so many aspects of their culture to daily learning. We truly learn and grow together!
If you are looking for a great elementary school, please check us out. We are dedicated to meeting the needs of your child. Together, we rise to the challenge!

A hidden gem in the MNPS system! Such a compassionate and caring environment for little ones! So thankful for the kind and highly committed staff at NBE!
I am extremely pleased for my son to go to Norman Binkley. It is an amazing school with extremely talented teachers and staff. Everyone I see in the halls is kind to me and my child in passing. It feels like a family for my son. The school building is newly renovated and very well kept. I think the test scores do not accurately portray what a great school this really is for our children.
- The homework load is sufficient for each grade level. The teachers encourage reading and have high expectations for students.
- Teachers use differentiated instruction in the classroom to make sure that each child is given the best educational experience.
- The expectations for the students are to be kind, help others, and many other great characteristics for our children to have. The expectations are written on the walls for the students to see and be reminded every day.
- As a parent of a kindergartner a few years back, I stopped by the office to pick up some paperwork and Mr. Urquhart knew my child's name and his test scores off the top of his head (even though I had met him once before). The teachers take initiative to make each classroom the best learning environment also.
- We have many English Language Learners at Norman Binkley. Instead of letting them fall behind in a class of different levels of English, the teaching staff has specialized ELL teachers who have been trained how to teach these specific children. The special education teachers are amazing as well. They love on our kids and teach them at their specific level, whether it is a child with certain challenges or a child who tests at a gifted level.
- There is no tolerance for bullying at this school. It is taken very seriously. Parents are contacted and steps are taken if bullying arises.
This is a wonderful school with highly a visible and smart principal and rigorous, but kind teachers. My child has loved it here since Kindergarten and will be headed to middle school after this year.
We have been so pleased with Norman Binkley! It is a wonderful school full of dedicated teachers. The school building itself has been newly renovated and is a lovely environment for learning. Each child is tested when they arrive for kindergarten and is placed in a reading group with kids on the same level. Our son started kindergarten reading CVC words and is already at an end of kindergarten/first grade level after the first semester. The test scores reported on this website are not so good (and I think they make parents worry that this is not a great school!) but I really feel that these test scores are a simply reflection of a large population of English Language learners and are not a good measure of the quality of the education. Norman Binkley is very diverse and we have found this to be a tremendous asset and wonderful learning environment for our son. I encourage every parent to take a tour!
As a parent, I am grateful my son has such wonderful friends from diverse backgrounds. He is academically challenged-- I cannot believe how much he has learned in just one year of Kindergarten! He is already at the reading level the state standards say he should be at by the end of the year and it is only February. The teachers here are so dedicated and compassionate--truly challenge students and nurture them socially and emotionally. Take a tour-- it's a beautiful environment!
- They differentiate instruction per student based on their needs.
- This school has an incredible approach to respect and empathy. Each morning they say a pledge and the students get to be on the announcements. They truly take ownership of these values.
- The leadership team comes in early and stays late. You will immediately see how dedicated they are.
- There is very little bullying or behavior issues at this school.
My daughter just completed Kindergarten at Norman Binkley. As most parents are, we weren't sure what to expect in the first year. The faculty is wonderful! They provide a safe and fun atmosphere which facilitates learning. The teachers will challenge their students as needed, or work with them in any problem area. The school also hosts many family-oriented activities, such as movie nights, a carnival, a fun run, Dads and Doughnuts, Moms and Muffins, as well as holiday centered programs. We could not be more pleased with this elementary school!
I love this school! I went here K-4, now my son goes here and is in 2nd grade. They have done a lot of great expansion since I went here! Very excited for the years to come.
Norman Binkley is awesome! Principal Urquhart and his staff have done an amazing job turning this school around. There has been huge improvements in test scores and parent engagement. The renovation and new addition allows everyone to see how great this neighborhood treasure really is - inside and out!
