May at a Glance

"...and they're in the backstretch as they head for home..."

Many people who work in corporate America are shown appreciation for their jobs by healthy bonuses, free trips, and prizes. In education, there are no bonuses, the trips you take are funded by your monthly salary, and prizes all too often consist of a certificate or a plant (or blue jeans).

Over my years in education, I've seen an evolution of blame for failure. Educational systems and schools are becoming more and more of a mine field for viral social media posts and new stories. We are human. We deal with close to 2000 students every day. We make decisions and make statements that can affect children and families daily. We're going to occasionally make a decision or statement that people may not agree with!

One day several years ago, after a nasty meeting with a parent, I was feeling defeated and frustrated with the things we have to put up with. My mentor looked at me and asked "how many parents did you meet with today?" After I told her one, she said "then there are 1841 other parents that might be okay with how you're running things"

You will probably never truly realize how many lives you affect in a positive way. You probably won't ever know that you steered a student to make decisions that will help him/her go out into the world and be successful. You won't know that your support helped a student emotionally and you won't know that students will tell stories about your class with fondness years from now.

It takes strength, endurance, but most importantly self-confidence and faith that what you are doing is making a positive impact in the lives of the people with whom you work. I don't see annual bonuses for the outstanding job that you do anytime in your near future but feel free to wear blue jeans this week I appreciate you!

It's a Great Day to be a Viking!
