Sophocles
Sophocles was a writer who is well know for his play Oedipus the king. He is one of three ancient Greek tragedians whose plays have survived.
Characters of the play
Oedipus
Oedipus the son and killer of Laius his father. the son and wife of Jocasta. after he saves the town of Thebes by answering the riddle of the jinx he marries his biological mother and they have 4 children. when he find out Oedipus gouges out his eyes.
Laius
The father of Oedipus. wife of Jocasta, he was told to not have a child (Oedipus) or the child would kill him and marry his wife(Jocasta). He met Oedipus at a road called "cleft way" where he was killed by Oedipus because he angered him. He also kidnapped and raped Chrysippus.
Jocasta
she was the mother and wife of Oedipus. she had four children with Oedipus. when she later found out that she was the mother of Oedipus and the grandmother of the four children she hanged herself.
Queen Merope
She found and adopted a baby found by the shepherds. she named the baby Oedipus.
King Polybus
He and Queen Merope adopted a baby found by the shepherds and named him Oedipus.
Sphinx
This sphinx attacks a city and kills all who fail to answer her riddle. what goes on four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three in the evening? Oedipus answers the riddle, A man. the sphinx then kills itself
Ismene
The daughter and half-sister of Oedipus, daughter and granddaughter of Jocasta , and sister of Antigone, Eteocles, and Polynices.
Antigone
Daughter of Oedipus and his mother Jocasta.
Eteocles
Was a king of Thebes, son of Oedipus and Jocasta.
Polynices
Son of Oedipus and Jocasta, his wife was Argea. He and his brother killed each other for the control of Thebes.
