Personality Disorders!!!
Antisocial
Case Study
Being mean started at a young age for Kurt, during preschool he was known as a bully. The home he was raised in was messy, lacking a father and his mother had many on and off boyfriends. His mother actually was hardly home due to her two jobs. Kurt though was always very smart, making great grades on tests but ignoring the homework. As he got older, relations with romance were trashy, having several girlfriends at a time. Later Kurt grew up to be a lawyer, lying and cheating his way to win cases. The last we know of Kurt is that he hit an eight year with his car, then fled the scene. He was then arrested, showing no remorse.
Group's Diagnosis/ Justification
My group and I have come to the conclusion that our friend, Kurt, has an antisocial personality disorder. Our justification is as follows:
*This all started at a young age
*Kurt's behavior is socially unacceptable
*Kurt has maladaptive behavior
*Kurt shows no concern for another's pain which he caused
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Personality itself is the set of behaviors, thoughts, and feelings one has. An antisocial personality disorder is when one's thoughts and behaviors are dysfunctional. People whom have this disorder have a tendency to be rude, mean, and harsh to others around them. This generally starts early in one's life, leading them to break laws and find themselves trapped in trouble. These people with this disorder tend to disregard things as right or wrong, have abusive relationships, and fail to learn from negative behavior. This disorder is generally diagnosed by consulting a psychiatrist, based on therapy, mental examination, thyroid function testing, blood counts, and screening for drugs and alcohol.
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Personalities come from the environment one is raised in. Causes to this disorder seem to be genetic or environment. Some may have genes that are more susceptible to developing this disorder. Messy upbringings happen to bring this disorder. Things like a lack of parenting, abuse, and foster care systems. A recent study also shows that when a woman smokes during pregnancy, the child has a better chance of developing antisocial personality disorder. The smoking lowers oxygen levels for the fetus, bringing about brain dysfunctions. This disorder is not all that prevalent in the U.S. Only 1.0% of adults in America suffer from it. Men seem to be more likely to develop this disorder and 46.1% of the people with it are getting treatment.
Prognosis
This disorder can be improved and even better yet, cured!
Treatment
The best known treatment for antisocial personality disorder are as follow:
