What's that smell? "Stinky Pirates" has DES 1st graders up and singing
Donelson 1st graders learned to recognize the Meter in songs with two and four beats in a measure or group. Students in Mr. Sims' music class used the song “Stinky Pirates” to accomplish this task by hoisting the sail on the pirate ship and singing the song as they move to the beat. Students also started the class off by walking and then marching to the beat of music that enabled them to hear and feel the difference of two and four beat music.
Rrrrrrrrrr!
AHS senior joins District Office as first-ever student intern
We're welcoming the district's very first student intern, Jake Stoope, to the district office team! The Class of 2023 senior is currently enrolled in Work-Based Learning at Arlington High, which allows him to leave school early to get hands-on, real-world experience three days a week. Jake is interested in pursuing a career in Sports Broadcast Journalism, so he'll work with ACS Communications this year to build his craft in film, photography, graphic design and much more! Some of the stories you'll see here will be developed by Jake, so let's cheer him on!

Apple pie...in a cup? It's real. Ask AES students in Ms. Mefferd's class
These AES 1st graders have been learning all about the apple! From the life cycle and parts of an apple to literature about the fruit, students have been able to demonstrate their learning through various activities. It all led to making apple pie in a cup using simple simple ingredients like graham crackers, canned apple, whip cream and sugar. Students had to work in collaborative groups and communicate effectively before digging in!
DES aims to help parents with Coffee with the Counselors series
Donelson Elementary's Coffee with the Counselors program has returned for the new school year! School Counselors Lauren Cocke and Kaadia Montgomery kicked off the series talking about The Role of a School Counselors: what they do, what they don't do and how they can best support students with the help from parents.
Coffee with the Counselors returns on October 20th to talk about Internet Safety. Click here to explore what they have planned in the year ahead!
To celebrate the district's new strategic plan, Portrait of an ACS Graduate, three teachers were honored with a giveaway, sponsored by Adaro Realty's Barbara Fletcher! To be eligible, employees had to post on social media how they're implementing the strategic plan into their classrooms and job roles to help student achievement. The district selection committee then determined who best showcased the tenants of the strategic plan during August.
Congratulations to Arlington Elementary's Dr. Carren Marvin and her protégé Merv the Puppet, Donelson Elementary's Kenzie Kivelle and Arlington High's Cameron White!
